Description
The Tanglefoot boulders are granite, with a variety of slab, crack, and thin face moves. There is a good assortment of fun boulders, both short and highball. While some of the granite may appear dirty or rotten, all of the routes marked as developed have been thoroughly cleaned.
While the boulders aren't exactly Bishop classics, this area's strengths are:
- The density of boulders with generally great landings, several minutes from the car
- Climbable in the summer, plenty of shady options before 11 AM and after 1 PM
- 15 minutes from Lower Bear Reservoir; plan for noon-time swimming and chilling by the lake
- Free dispersed camping anywhere in the area
The grading is softer than Bishop in the V0-V3 range. Grades are subject to change; please comment or contact me if you have suggestions/revisions. Star rating is relative to this area, and also subject to change. And of course, there's still tons of development potential.
This area (and all of Lower Bear Reservoir) is closed from the third week of October to mid May, snow dependant. Mosquito repellent is recommended during June-July. If camping, be aware of fire restrictions, which often are in effect by August.
Getting There
The Tanglefoot Boulders are located a mile past Cole Creek Campground and a couple miles from the Tanglefoot Trailhead. It is accessible from the Lower Bear Reservoir exit off Highway 88. From Berkeley, it's 3 hours to the boulders. We usually park at or near a "dirt driveway" off the right side of the road at the marked GPS location. If there's random campers, just politely ask to walk around their setup.
