Description Suggest change

A group of mostly south and southwest facing climbs with an amazingly short (5 minute) approach. This area has a special energy. Maybe it's the Sedona vortexes, maybe it's the nearby Stupa, or maybe it's just an awesome place to be. This subarea offers great views, an easy approach and fun climbing. It will definitely suck you in. There are 3 or 4 established climbs on this feature and many more being developed in the area. If you have a few extra minutes, be sure to stop by the Stupa. It's worth the short detour and may bring you good Karma.

I hate to be the "climbing nanny" but can't help myself. This area attracts lots of beginning climbers and maybe they just don't know. There is a TON of loose rock at the top of this climb and lots of loose flakes to the sides of the routes. Some are the size of pebbles and some bigger than softballs. Be sure you wear a helmet and keep everyone else out of the fall zone in case your climber or rope knocks off rocks. One softball-sized rock in your head can really ruin your day.

Getting There Suggest change

Did I mention the short approach? Should take only 5 minutes from the Thunder Mt. Trailhead. From 89A take Dry Creek Road north, turn right on Thunder Mountain Road and go about a 1/2 mile. Look for the Thunder Mountain Trailhead and parking area on your left (north) side. The trailhead is in City limits so the Red Rock Pass is not required. From the parking area, take the Chimney Rock Trail to the north. After a few minutes, you'll see an intersection with the Thunder Mountain Trail. At the intersection, head right on the Thunder Mountain Trail. After a couple more minutes, strike out due north to the base of the rock. If you are willing to hike for another 5 minutes (who has that kind of time?), you can also stage from the Andante Trailhead. Just go to the end of Andante, strike out west from the parking area, then left at the first junction. Look for the crag on your right.
