Description
Tinka is a Granite dome in the Eldorado Forest, just up the valley from Bear River Reservoir. Hosts several great climbs ranging from 5.5 up to 5.11, a 15 minute approach, and beautiful views. The dome faces SouthEast and gets sun all day long. This can even be climbed when the snow is 3-4 feet deep, but bring your snowshoes and a serious puffy.
Getting There
Option 1 - The best way involves a short trip on a dirt road (4x4 / AWD recommended). From Highway 88, turn onto Upper Dufrene Road Entrance and take first left and drive 10 minutes, parking at 38.588051, -120.223850. From here, look for a use trail that heads left and down the hill east to Tinka Dome (38.587194,-120.218028)
Note: Upper Dufrane Rd. does not have a sign like its lower counterpart and is slightly hard to see, until you're practically passing it and this in either direction while traveling on 88. It is approx. 2.4 miles after Peddler Hill Scenic View Point (which overlooks Bear River Reservoir), if heading East up 88. And or is approx. 0.2 miles after Forest Meadows Rd (which is on the left; Durfrane and Upper Dufrane are both on the right side, if heading East.) If heading West down 88 from Tahoe/Nevada etc. Upper Dufrane Rd is slightly less than 4 miles after the old Iron Mountain Snow Park and on the left.
Option 2 - At times the gate above is locked. In this case, take a longer drive from Dufrene Road entrance. Take a left at the N18 signpost. Otherwise, follow instructions as above.
Note: Heading East up 88, Durfrane Rd. is approx. 0.4 miles after Peddler Hill Scenic View point. If heading West down 88 from Tahoe/Nevada etc. Dufrane Rd. is slightly less than 6 miles from the old Iron Mountain Snow Park.
Option 3 - You can hike from Highway 88 directly, avoiding the dirt roads. Park at 38.588648,-120.230882, jump the fence, and hike almost due east, first to the 4x4 parking, then onto the dome. Approx. 30 minutes, but use your GPS.
