Access Issue: Seasonal Raptor Closures Details

Each year, the USFS monitors for raptor nesting.

A pair of golden eagles regularly nest on Bridge Creek Wall. When in effect, starting January 1, PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB or travel within 1/2 mile of Bridge Creek Wall. As a reference, the climb Condorphamine Addiction is just outside of this 1/2 mile buffer, and is OK to climb still. The closure extends through August 15, but there is active monitoring to determine if the seasonal closure can be lifted earlier.

In 2014, there was an active pair of peregrine falcons at Snow Creek Wall, but no official closure was put in effect due to the location of the falcons. The site will be continually monitored with changes or removal of closures updated as necessary.

Description

The Helm hosts a handful of great granite sport climbs. You are likely to have the area to yourself. The climbs typically start with a steep and stout boulder down low and then transform into fun vertical granite climbing.

Getting There

Follow the trail to Little Bridge Creek Rock and keep walking past the wall. The trail will snake up the hillside in a dry creek bed. Eventually you will hit a couple of switch backs. You will cross a couple of slabs and then you will be on a mossy slab running with water. Just beyond this point there are small walls you walk alongside and head back down canyon. Soon you arrive on the top of The Helm with easy top rope access. Rappel in or walk down and around. About 15-20 minutes from the road.

Alternatively one can take the road up until an old road cut on the left and dash up the hill. Follow the path of least resistance through the brush until you arrive at a small cliff band. Skirt the cliff on the right and traverse back left up the hill to the base of the cliff. 15 minutes from the road.
