Description Suggest change

A free-standing Schnebly spire with a distinctive bulbous summit and steep flanks offering quality stone. It's pretty much by itself, and stands out from various vantages in west Sedona.

It was first climbed by Sedona hardmen Scott Baxter and Tim Toula in the mid-nineties, and seems to be the last recorded new Sedona spire for either of them.

Getting There Suggest change

Drive the rugged Dry Creek Road to the Brins Mesa Trailhead on the right (east) side of the road. Hike east on Brins Mesa Trail for approx. 3/4 mile, until a major side drainage cuts off to the left (east). This drainage is between two prominent areas of slickrock the trail crosses, and just before the second one is reached. There is a very large juniper on the left side of the mouth of the drainage.
Hike up the drainage for almost 1 mile, until the spire is obvious on the ridgeline above and to the left (north) of the drainage and there is an expanse of slickrock just above and left (north) of the drainage. Exit the drainage onto the slickrock, and follow your nose up the final steep slope, weaving around to avoid the most vegetation. The ridgeline below the satellite formations to Tomahawk, and around the left (west) side of these formations proved pretty brush-free.
Total hike time is an hour or slightly more.

Bloom/Wolfe Sedona Rocks (guidebook) has a very detailed topo for this approach, which proved useful and pretty accurate. It's worth seeking out.
