Description
The Queyras mountain group is on the east side of the Haut Durance valley, along the frontier with Italy. The main roads and streams and rivers of the Queyras come down through the city of Guillestre, which is SE from Briancon and NE from Embrun. They're on the opposite side of the Durance River from the higher and more famous peaks of the Ecrins.
Peaks are not so dramatic, so have to appreciate them for the climbing itself, not the views -- except for the near view to Mont Viso -- but that lone giant is across the border in Italy. Not easy to drive to from any major city of France (or Italy), so some French climbers and skiers and hikers choose it to "get away".
Many of the climbing routes near the frontier (and especially Mont Viso) are more easily reached from the east from Italy.
Getting There
The obvious gateway is the city of Guillestre, which can be reached by roads ESE from Grenoble through Briancon, or ENE from Gap through Embrun, or from Marseille and Aix-en-Provence by major highways or trains which get sort of close. In summertime from the city of Briancon sometimes it's quicker to drive high over Col d'Izoard. Or from the Cuneo province of Italy can drive sin summertime over the even higher pass of Col d'Agnel.
