Description
Major draws to this area include morning shade, lack of crowds, beautiful views of the Chicago Lakes basin, and a wide range of difficulties. Drawbacks include a long hike (if you don’t plan on climbing out) and semi-limited beta.
BEWARE: the top of these features are peak marmot country!
Getting There
From Mt. Blue Sky (formerly Mount Evans) Road (0.75 miles, raps):
This approach is far faster but only if you intend to top out one of the three features or do a grueling hike up the side of the slab. Starting from the pay booth, drive 4.5 miles up Mt. Evans road, and park after a hard left turn at a good-sized pullout on the left. From the pullout, spot the minor outcropping of rock to the southwest, and hike to the notch just looker’s right. From the notch, one can rap into the feature of their choosing.
From Chicago Creek Trail (2.75 miles, same as bouldering area A):
Park at the Echo Lake Picnic Area. Follow a nice gravel path to the west side of the lake, where a signed trail for the Chicago Lakes heads off to the southwest. Follow this trail for a few hundred yards over a ridge, into the Chicago Lakes Basin. The trail traverses along the valley wall for a while and then drops steeply towards the valley floor, through a series of switchbacks. Once at the valley floor, the trail crosses a creek, then joins an old dirt road. Turn left at the road, and head steeply uphill towards the reservoir.
Follow the road to the southwest corner of the reservoir, past two cabins, to a signed trailhead for the Chicago Lakes. Stop here, and fill out your free wilderness permit. Follow the Chicago Lakes Trail through undulating terrain for several minutes. You will pass a nice looking block (the "Trailside Boulder") on the right in a nice meadow. Five minutes after passing the Trailside Boulder the trail forks. Head left, through the meadow toward the obvious outcrop of rock and boulders below. Follow the trail through the meadow, across two make-shift bridges, then into the woods on the opposite side of the meadow.
