Description Suggest change

Needle Rock is a prominent spire along the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway near Wise River, MT. I only climbed the more prominent western face, but there is potential on both the south and north faces. Being so close to the road, I'm sure it has been climbed before. I haven't found any information on it, however.

Getting There Suggest change

From I-15, take the Divide/Wise River exit to Highway 43. Once on 43, travel 13 or so miles to Wise River. Take a left onto the northern entrance of the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway and drive south until you can see Needle Rock. It's hard to miss.

Park at the Pettengell Day Use Area and either bushwhack along the river until directly across from Needle Rock, or follow the road for a few hundred feet and cut in towards the rock when it comes into view. Either way, you'll have to cross Sheep's Creek so be prepared to get a little wet. Once on the other side of the creek either huck straight up the scree field to the base of the spire, or cut to the right or left and walk around the base of the spire.
