Description
For those who are undaunted by the challenges of navigating along unimproved desert trails, the Calico Mountain range offers a few diamonds in the rough. As the name suggests, the Calico Mountains are a colorful composition of a great many rock and soil types, most which are not conducive to climbing.
However, there are a few features in the small mountain range worthy of exploration and possibly further development. Monolith is a prominent buttress jutting from the unnamed rim located just North of the Calico Mountain peak. It features approximately 400 vertical feet of mostly unexplored cliff face of various quality rock; to include a variety of granite at portions of the base which is unlike other granite varieties seen around the area.
For a less daunting option, Family feud is slightly more accessible to the casual explorer both physically and vehicularly. The Feud currently offers just 3 routes which are less than 50 feet tall. While Family Feud lacks in stature and route selection, it certainly makes up with its route offerings and rock quality. Family Feud is a perfect for choice for 5.10 climbers looking for a new crag all by themselves.
As with the rest of the climbing destinations in the Mojave, climbers must be prepared to face the elements. Plan your trip accordingly and ensure others know where you are going.
