Description
Gjipe is a beautiful beach location in southern Albania. The climbing is on featured limestone with 7 sectors and over 70 routes from 4a to 8b.
A number of sectors mostly located on the west side of the walls above the beach at the open exit of the canyon and one sector right at the water’s edge on the southeast end of the beach cove.
This location has a somewhat secluded feel given the steep, 4wd road access.
Located nearly half way between Dhermi Beach to the west and Jali Beach to the east.
There appears to be a semblance of primitive camping with a seasonable campground and potentially a café/bar situation. But, the drive down to the beach is exposed on a poor road and don’t consider unless a real 4wd and the skills to employ it are available. Walk down first at least.
We enjoyed our end of the day beverages at the small bar where the trail meets the beach. The owner was super friendly and the kittens were adorable :)
Getting There
Coming from Himarë, drive nearly 12km towards Dhermi. Note passing over a canyon where the road takes a big bend (Gjipe Canyon).
Take a left onto what might be the best paved road, with nicely spaced street lights, in all of Albania (it might seem!). Soon after the turn a trailhead for the canyon appears on the left. Rumor has this approach takes a few hours and requires a rope (the signage at the trailhead indicates otherwise – who knows?).
Continue to a parking lot (less than 3km) passing the turn off to Manastiri i Shen Theodhorit (the Saint Theodore Monastery sitting off in the distance to the right) . There may or may not be an attendant at the parking lot collecting a 200 leke fee. After a quick glance at the stripped vehicle at the edge of the parking lot, the fee may seem pretty reasonable (!).
The hike in from the parking lot is around 1.5km and takes less than a half hour.
If coming from Dhërmi (the town, not the beach), the turn off will be on the right (as one heads towards Himarë) after around 4km.
