Description Suggest change

This is a provincial park that is famous for its 50 k loop hiking trail that mostly follows a splendid section of Nova Scotia coastline on the Bay of Fundy with spectacular views from cliffs over 200 meters above sea level. Development of ice climbing began in 2014 and has been happening ever since. Each year several new routes are put up. Very view climbers have ventured into this area but hopefully that will change in the future. Access is simple. Drive to the park entrance. Leave your car in the parking lot and walk the beach westward from the visitor center. The climbing season is relatively short due to the southern aspect of the cliffs. The very best time to climb is from mid December to mid January but if it stays cold you could climb much later than that. Whatever month of winter you are there you will need a window of at least 5 days of consistent cold weather with temps from -5 and below to have enough ice to make the routes climbable. Cloudy and overcast days are best.

Getting There Suggest change

Cape Chignecto Provincial Park is located in West Advocate Harbour, 45 km (28 miles) west of Parrsboro and 80 km (50 miles) from Amherst. From Halifax on Hwy 104, take Exit 12. At Parrsboro take Hwy 209 to the park. From New Brunswick on Hwy 104, take Exit 4 to Hwy 302 to Hwy 242. Then follow Hwy 209 to the park. From the park entrance walk west along the beach toward Refugee Cove. Please note it is not possible to walk past McGahey Brook on the beach about one hour after low tide as the water will cover the beach. You must know the tide schedule in order to approach via the beach and move around between the climbs on the beach. It is still possible to access all the climbs but this must be done by walking the hiking trail that follows the coastline.
