Description
This huge tiered face is surely the main attraction for those seeking grand multi-pitch adventures in a gorgeous coastal mountain setting. On a clear day, the views from anywhere on this face are simply stunning. There are many wandering routes here up to 9 pitches in length, and staying on your desired path can be tricky. Get a good local guidebook and study it in advance before trying any of the longer routes which top out on the summit.
Getting There
Walk through town and follow street signs to the old chapel of Notre Dame des Champs. From there, follow steps steeply up to an old garden/shrine. Exit the garden/shrine on the left and follow a distinct trail marked with purple blazes until a right branch leads up to a gully splitting the lowest rock bands below the main west face. Scramble up the gully and head up/left to reach all routes starting near La Mafia cave on the left side of the West Face, or traverse out right to reach routes starting on the right side of the West Face. From the summit of the Main West Face, simply follow the prominent hiker's trail back to town. This trail is marked with huge cairns and yellow blazes.
