Description
Just outside the Zirkel Wilderness, with a trailhead at 7,600', we found this pleasant hike to be a great place for beginning climbers. The trail leads up through scrub oaks gaining 1,200' in less than a mile. With great views, it's a fun place to spend a day. I have lots of memories here. The area is popular with cyclists. Watch out for mountain lions.
Getting There
From Steamboat take County Road 36 north through Strawberry Park, past the Steamboat Mountain School and past the Bear Creek trailhead parking area. Just before the now private Strawberry Park hot springs, there is parking on a rise just after the Bear Creek drainage. The faint trail starts here. An obvious trail continues past the beaver dams into a dense stand of large aspens. The trail to the peak crosses some logs before this point and continues up the steep west ridge to the summit.
