Description Suggest change

As you drive north of Shoshone Idaho along highway 75 you would think that there is no climbing whatsoever for miles and miles. The landscape looks like flat lava rock with some sagebrush growing on it. What you fail to realize however is that the lava flow that you are driving over left a series of lava tubes that have collapsed in sections and remained in tact in other sections. A couple of these lava tubes can be toured for a fee of around $10 per person, but as a climber, you're probably more interested in the collapsed sections that have left awesome cave features just below ground level that can be climbed. Currently there are two developed collapsed lava tubes in this area, but there may be room for further development as well.

Note: Snakes love it the Shoshone Lava Tubes too! Wear closed toed shoes and know how to deal with venomous snake bites before venturing to this area.

For any questions or concerns about existing routes and hardware conditions, or establishing new routes, please reach out to Southern Idaho Climbing Coalition at info@climbsicc.com.

Getting There Suggest change

From Shoshone, ID, head north on Idaho highway 76 for 15 to 16 miles. The two developed collapsed lava tubes can be found just east of the highway in this area. For directions to the individual caves see their respective area descriptions.
