Description Suggest change

Jabberwocky tower is a small, relatively obscure tower located just to the east of Colchuck Lake. The 300 m W. face and tower blend in so well along Colchuck Lake,  that you can’t even see it until partway up the Asgard Pass trail. There are two routes on the short side of the summit pinnacle that go at 5.7 or less. There has also been some recent route development on the south west rib. The tower has great views of Dragontail and Colchuck Balanced Rock. You'll have this one to yourself. Don't expect sun while the sun is low in the sky. The climbs are well-suited for shoulder season or a relaxing day in a beautiful area.

The rock is solid but fractured, watch for loose blocks, and sections of kitty litter.

Getting There- Descent Suggest change

Jabberwocky Tower is located in the Enchantments directly between the Colchuck Balanced Rock and Colchuck Lake. Start at the Stuart Lake trailhead and head up the Mt. Stuart trail. At the fork around 2.5 miles at the signed fork head left for Colchuck Lake. Once you get to Colchuck Lake you have two options.

(1) Head around the northeast side of the lake. Hidden just over the creek there is a faint trail that ascends slope just above the lake. There is no cairn but if you search a bit you'll find it. After gaining some quick elevation the trail will start to traverse south along slope towards Colchuck Balanced Rock. A few scrambling moves are required through this section. Once you are roughly below Colchuck Balanced Rock look towards the lake and a relatively small tower (~100'/30m) will be waiting between you and the lake. Start dropping down towards the tower following the path of least resistance (through a boulder field and above some small cliff bands). Following this path you will arrive at the notch below the East Face route.

(2) Beckey reports an alternative approach that begins at the SE end of Colchuck Lake.  There is more than one route through the trees. There is recently installed high route that starts 15 minutes up Asgard trail when you are level with the southwest rib at a triangular boulder. Follow cairns and cut slide alder left, occasionally going up Rocky gullies or talus fields towards the base of the southwest rib.

Descent: the easternmost summit pinnacle now has a double bolt rappel station. There are people who rappel off of a mid station, but that is now known to be a dead tree. At this point it is best to take a tag line or double ropes and do a full 50m rappel from the summit to the base. From the base of the rappel, it is best to head east towards the colchuck balanced rock approach trail. This can also save some time getting back to the car. There are also tree sling anchors that would lead back west towards the base of the southwest rib. That is known to be many rappels and loose down- climbing, however.
