Description
South facing sunny boulders along a hill side above Hay Creek. Rock quality varies from poor to good with the west side being somewhat better quality rock although the boulders can vary. The rock is sandstone mixed with pebbles similar to boxcar rocks. The boulders are spread out along a hill side for about a 1/3 of a mile. From the high ball boulder, to low roofs, to slabs there is a little bit of everything out here. the Majority of boulders out have been climbed and are not put on MP. Although with that said there is still potential for more problems that could be established back here, if you are willing to take the time to peel all the pebbles off and fight the briars.
Getting There
The Boulders are on the south side of the preserve along a south facing hill that runs along hay creek on the other side of route 82. You can park at either side of old 82 (same parking as the climbing quarry). If you park on the south side you'll need to walk down to the old trap bridge and hike the Haycreek trail back toward the south gate. You can also find a way to cross the creek near the south gate parking so you don't have to back track. If you park at rustic park, hike past the climbing quarry onto the Haycreek trail which is an old railroad bed. The boulders can be accessed via the MTB trails (Dye cut trail) off the Haycreek trail. Once you find the Dye cut trail, depending on which way you come in you'll find the warm-up boulder or the dye cut boulder first. These 2 and the Football boulder are the only boulders lower on the hill. To get to the other boulders you'll need to find the MTB trail (penny lane) between the Warm-up boulder and Dye cut boulder that goes up the hill. Follow the trail up the hill about 75ft, another MTB trail (good day sunshine) splits left, follow this trail for a few hundred feet. There will be a path that goes straight as the MTB trail continues right, up the hill. Follow the path as it contours the hill. The boulders are spread out along this path with the Cobra boulder being the first you'll see on the path and the Gem boulder is several hundred feet behind on the Good Day Sunshine trail. The path then continues until you get to Paul Bunion boulder. The trail ends here in a hollow. You will need to find your way to the rest of the boulders on the west side. The majority of them can be seen from the main boulder area where the trail ends. A hand saw or machete may be handy for combating the briars as they can be bad on the west side. The boulders are on public land but close to private property. Please stay clear of the homes and any no trespassing signs at the bottom of the hill.
