Description

The summit is the farthest point from the center of the earth due to its equatorial location. It is a glaciated volcano. Originally thought to be the highest mountain in the world, in 1880, it was first climbed by Edward Whymper and Louis & Jean-Antoine Carrel.

Getting There

Taxi from Riobamba's Terminal Terrestre to the end of the road near the lower of the two refugios. Stay at the Whymper hut-the higher of the two.

Snow capped Chimborazo, with Carrel Hut and Whymper Hut just visible in the middle of the photo. The [[110735330]] ascends the left side, below the "The Castle" rock formation and up the large snow shoulder to the summit. The original [[110735327]] ascended the now dirt shoulder to the right of the Whymper Hut.
