Description
This crag is located six hundred feet above the east end of the Valdez Airport runway and is the upper right cliff in a cluster of four. A good approach trail has already been cut in to access Lookout Rock and the Panorama Point area. The hike up here is AMAZING and well worth it even if the cliff is not yet finished. Lookout Rock!! is a project in the making so no anchors or bolts are currently on the wall. It can be top roped off alders but be forewarned there are thousands of pounds of rock, dirt, and moss that still needs to be scrubbed and trundled off this face before it is ready for the normal climber. If anyone wants to drag a shovel, pick, pry bar and a dozen wire brushes up to the wall and put in a few hundred hours of effort we'll have a new crag soon. If not I hope to invite you up some time in the fall of 2014 for some great new routes.
Getting There
Drive past the Valdez Airport and turn left into Valdez Glacier Campground. Follow the main road threw the campground to where it dead ends at the runway and park if driving a car. From here follow the Old Jeep Trail (dirt Road) 1/2 mile to the second right hand side trail. This trail leads directly to the mountain and starts an ambitious uphill approach charging straight up 600' vertical feet of steep hiking. The trail leads to the base of the wall then traverses along the bottom and continues up another hundred feet to Panorama Point. Approach time is about 20 min.
P.S. Climbers have been on the good side of the camp hosts for many years, and we want to keep it that way. DRIVE SLOWLY IN THE CAMPGROUND and DO NOT PARK IN CAMPSITES. Saying hi and offering a beer every now and then can't hurt good relations :)
