Description Suggest change

This area encompasses all of the rock/ice/snow climbing areas in the vicinity of South Central Alaska. The largest city in this region is the Municipality of Anchorage, with approximately 250,000 residents. South Central Alaska includes all areas along the Glenn Highway north/east to Glenallen, along the Seward Highway to Whittier, and onto the Parks Highway halfway between Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Additional Information about Anchorage and South Central Alaska Climbing:

There is a gym in Anchorage, alaskarockgym.com, and also a small gym in Wasilla. There are several guidebooks, the most recent iterations are Kelsey Grey's books. There is also a bouldering guide which is fairly limited in scope. The books are available at Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking, the Hoarding Marmot, and REI. They can also be found in Title Wave books used from time to time.

The guidebooks are available at the below links:

Bolting Ethics Suggest change

Recently a enormous effort to replace existing hardware has been undertaken by primarily one or two individuals. Done without funding from outside sources, most of the popular routes are now equipped with stainless bolts, and in many cases glue-in bolts. A huge shout-out to those folks.

Many of the climbs done in Alaska are poorly documented or not at all. If you are interested in development figure out who the local developers are and try and get in with them, and don't just go bolting willy-nilly. And please, don't bolt beside gear placements in Hatcher, or really anywhere.

It must be mentioned that adding bolts to existing climbs is considered poor ethics, and generally will not be tolerated by the community. Additionally, moving bolts for a reason other than safety concerns is probably not a great idea.

The climbing areas in Alaska are a shared resource and the ethics of the overall community should be respected.

Getting There

If you don't live in the state of Alaska, the best way to get there is via plane, landing at the Ted Stevens International Airport and renting a car.
