Description
This is a 300' dome of rock on the ridgeline of El Pital on the El Salvador and Honduras border. Potential for multi-pitch adventure climbing, sport routes, and topropes.
Getting There
From San Salvador, take the troncal del norte past La Palma to the muncipio of San Ignacio. From San Ignacio, Chalatenango, stay on the troncal about 3-5 km. If you're on the bus (119), it's the desvio for El Rosario, on the right. Go up about 1 km into El Rosario. Park, and hike up through pastures and woods to the obvious, giant dome of rock on the ridge.
If you're heading for the top of the rock, stay to the right (East); you'll actually pass the Piedra, and hook around and approach from the pastures to the North. There are footpaths that will get you to the top without any 4th class scrambling.
If you're going to the base, you'll probably have to bushwhack a bit, and there will be some steep, 4th class scrambling.
The boundary line between Honduras and El Salvador crosses right over the Piedra, and it is patrolled by soldiers from both countries. Be sure to have a passport with a valid entry visa for one or both, because they will check your papers.
