Description

The more sunny of the two side-by-side canyons in this area. Features some larger, more exposed walls of pocketed limestone.

Please note climbing around pictographs is forbidden. The "Painted Wall" has not been added to the database for this reason. Please observe and respect closure signs.

Getting There

From Helena: Take Canyon Ferry Road (Hwy 430/284) East around North side of lake over the dam. Turn left on Hellgate Gulch Road. Drive time: 45 minutes.

From Bozeman: Take I-90 West to 287 North towards Helena. Turn right in Townsend on Hwy 12. Take a left on Hwy 284. Head north for about 25 miles. Turn right on Hellgate Gulch Road. Drive time: 1:15

Wow, this place looks fantastic. Multiple shark fin type limestone walls reminds me of a mini-Potrero Chico. You could put 100s of climbs in here. Was pretty just to go see. Aug 3, 2014
Please don't put 100's of climbs in here. The petroglyphs have been recently (2015) defaced and attracting more people who may or may not respect the significance of the site is a bad idea. I'm not saying it was a climber, it probably wasn't, but if you promote this spot the chances of eventually attracting someone dumb enough to deface the artifacts increases. Defacing artifacts such as those found here is a felony with possible jail time and a $500,000 fine. Please be respectful and thoughtful with what sites are promoted and developed. Thank you.
