Access Issue: Closures Details

Seasonal closures Feb. 15-July 31. Per the Denver Post:, the Cathedral Wall and all areas above the Loch Vale-Sky Pond Trail are closed to off-trail travel! Per this RMNP website, "Initial closures now occur in Feb. 15 and April, when raptors return to the region and scout for nesting sites. Areas containing general habitat preferred by raptors are closed during this time. Once raptors have selected nesting spots, the initial closures are lifted or adjusted. The specific areas which raptors choose for nesting sites are closed."

Description

The Gable lies above the North side of Odessa Lake and consists of several fins, spires, and low-angle buttresses.

Getting There

The best way to approach The Gable is from Bear Lake. Head to Lake Helene, then drop down to Odessa. When you parallel the outlet for Lake Odessa, bushwhack down through the trees 60 feet. You should be very near the lake's outlet, and a hiker's trail can be found. Take the hikers trail along the lake to the North and West. After 0.1 miles, or about the middle of the lake, you'll find a small inlet stream. A faint trail exists to the east of this which is difficult to pick up at first. You may have to negotiate around downed trees, but continue up adjacent to this small drainage, and it will turn into a talus field within about 5 minutes of hiking. From the talus, the cliff is directly in front of you. Angle up and right to base, then right along base to "The Rasp". It took us 1.5 hours to approach, it may be a little longer if you don't know the area.
