Getting weather forecast...

Description

Maxwell Falls is a great place for camping, rock climbing, and hiking. It is a pretty shady area, it can get hot in the summer, and it is excellent in the fall. I would say it is a hidden climbing sanctuary for the mountain people that enjoy moderate to difficult lead routes, on exceptionally solid rock.

Getting There

Start from Evergreen around the lake is CO-74, Turn right at the intersection CO-73 heading toward Conifer, follow this road for a couple miles and you will see Brook Forest Road, turn right, follow road 3 miles past the Brook Forest Inn. Once you pass the Inn, there are two parking lots 1.25 miles up the road (left on Black Mountain Rd.), the first one is on the left after a couple of switchbacks, there is a wood fence that goes along the road, park and follow the trail to the cliffs. The second parking lot is the actual Maxwell Falls parking lot, it's a very distinct parking lot at the bottom of the road on your left, this will take you to the falls and the bottom of the cliffs.

Per the National Forest service Hiking, Clear Creek Ranger District: the hike on Trail #111 is 2 miles with 600 feet elevation gain and follows Maxwell Creek.

Ugh, my worst fears have come true. Some places really should just remain "word of mouth". Aug 17, 2010

Ah crap. There goes the neighborhood. Aug 18, 2010
Really, this place is a crappy choss pile and not worth a visit. And the snakes! And bees! I mean wasps and bubonic plague prairie dogs. Stay away! Aug 18, 2010
I know a guy who got Herpes Type II climbing at Maxwell. Just sayin'. Aug 24, 2010

Oh man, you had to bring that poor guy into this. Considering that, posting this area might be seen as a negligent act and said poster might be considered liable in the eyes of some courts. Just sayin'. Aug 24, 2010

Just finding a little humor in the situation, bub. I'm not excited about this area being posted, but it is what it is. I was just having a little fun, a little therapeutic levity if you will. Apologies. Aug 26, 2010

There are quite a few rocks in the area that resemble beer cans, no they are beer cans. Please pack out your trash or pick some up if you see it. This area needs some T.L.C. I've been playing here since the early nineties and would like to see it taken care of.
Thanks! Nov 21, 2010

Did some soloing there today. WTF, people?! Nothing but trash and broken glass and charred up trees at the bottom of the crags. Come on! What happened to pack it in pack it out, leave no trace. It's dumbshits like you leaving trash around that gets climbing areas closed. Apr 18, 2014

Every time I go to Maxwell Falls, I pack out a trash bag of someone else's garbage, but it never seems to get better. There's always junk all over the place. We gotta start packing out our own garbage, people! May 17, 2014

Locals only, brah! I was just here yesterday on a day hike date, and it started raining. We fled to an overhang for shelter. While snacking in this shelter, my date noticed amongst the litter pile... a freakin' SYRINGE. On the edge of a cliff! I don't think heroin has a socially acceptable setting, but if it did, it certainly wouldn't be cliffside. Jun 12, 2014

Hey guys, I think this one is out of our control. On more than one occasion, I've confronted a group of a dozen or better high schoolers out there to party and camp for the night. Of course, they assure me that they are responsible and pack out their trash, but as was stated, the trash just keeps mounding up! This place has a history of being one of the local teen party dumps...tough one! Aug 3, 2014
Where can I find actually info on bouldering Maxwell Falls? I'll keep your sacred secret area safe from yuppies and losers, but I want to know the routes and grades. Looks like some awesome V5-V8 problems. Share the wealth, would ya? Oct 15, 2016
As mentioned above, lots of human impact in this area. Glass everywhere. No one should be bringing glass anything onto the trail. Jun 4, 2018
