Getting weather forecast...
Access Issue: Beginning February 1st and lasting until July 31st, a section of the Nockamixon Cliffs Natural Area in Delaware Canal State Park will be CLOSED TO ALL ACTIVITY. Details

The Narrows, located in Kintnersville, PA is home to maybe the best ice climbing in Pennsylvania. This area is filled with 400 foot high Brunswick Shale and has reliable routes. There is convenient parking which offers practically no approach. If it happens to snow a lot make sure to bring a shovel to get into the parking lot. Over the winter, this summer choss pile turns into a pretty great place considering it's in PA, but still be careful, theirs still plenty of loose rock.

The three most popular and most reliable routes are, Main Flow, Main Gully and Dead Deer Gully.

Getting There

From Knitnersville at the intersection of State Highway 611 and State Highway 32, turn onto State Highway 32 and drive about 5 miles. You will start to see some ice along side the road. You will see a dirt parking lot on the right and an abandoned factory on the left across the river.
From there it is a matter of walking along the road to get to the climbs. At the parking area you will be in between Main Gully and Dead Dear Gully. Facing the cliff Main Gully will be to the Left and Dead Dear Gully will be to the right.

When do these climbs usually come in? Or rather, how long does the weather need to be consistently cold for these climbs to come in? I live in Utah but am from PA and will be visiting my family this winter. Wondering if I should bring my ice gear. Oct 23, 2013

Just a heads up, the main parking lot is subject to rockfall. I had heard (and expected as much) but this weekend we were socializing about 20 ft away from a car that got its windshield smashed. It was still well below freezing so its not just during warm-up's. There appears to be some degrading rock below the upper roof.

Also, I have to note that the two times I was at the narrows this year, everyone did a stellar job parking and not leaving extra space. Props to the community for that. Mar 3, 2015
CLOSURE: Due to a endangered species nesting. This area will be closed from Feb 1 to July 31 per the park service. More information will be posted when it is received. Please obey this closure as to not impact our future access to the area. Jan 30, 2016
