Description

Relatively sheltered compared to the other Ponderosa areas. Lots of big trees providing shade, and reasonably wind free. Rock quality varies dramatically in this area, from really good to awfully bad depending on where you are.

Getting There

Continue past The Pond parking on the forest service road, past the campground, through some switch backs, eventually cutting across a hillside that rises on your right. Look through the trees to your left for a buried water tank, it looks like a satellite dish flipped upside down. Turn onto a faint side road that goes past this and turns to near parallel the main road in the bottom of the valley, eventually deadending at a triangular shaped boulder about 12-15' tall. Park and climb. The turn off is about 4 miles from where the road turns to dirt or 1 mile past the silver gate that can close off the road. The side road is also recognizable by a couple of piles of granite blocks that are right by the side of the road where the FS has tried to block this side road.

If you come to a hair pin turn in the back of the valley going left, you have gone too far. Some areas here are actually better approached from above this hair pin and will be detailed in those areas.

is the gate closed this time of year?

Thanks in advance. Jan 25, 2010

I'm going to guess that it is closed at this point. It is usually open through christmas time and it was open the week after for sure, but we've had a good bit of snow since then so I'd imagine it is closed. The gate that is closed is a fair ways up the road though and the turn off is only about a mile past the gate (silver one) so even if the gate is closed it might not be too bad to get up there.

You could always check with the Jemez NF Ranger District station (575)829-3535. Jan 25, 2010
