Hells Gate Rock Climbing

A brilliant volcanic gorge with great multi-pitch basalt climbing in the Great Rift Valley, only 1.5 hours from Nairobi.

Despite the road-side nature, be prepared for adventurous routes. This weekend crag has been a nexus of Kenyan climbing for decades. It demands most of the tricks in your book, and will teach you a few others on the way.

Nevertheless, there's nothing like the setting and history of Hell's Gate: clipping fixed pins from the 70's and jamming bomber cracks above grazing zebra and giraffe, with the occasional bush in your face, will be an unforgettable experience.
