Description

What would you say if I told you that perfect (albeit defaced) granite boulders standing 10-15 feet high existed in Wisconsin? You'd probably think I was crazy, but you'd be wrong. The Monico Boulders are this place.

Getting There

Approximately one mile South of Old 26 on Highway 45, just South of Monico, WI. The main boulders lie on the West side of the highway.

Hey Joel, I live in Rhinelander for the summer, if you looking for someone to climb with, just let me know.

It doesn't look like anyone has been here lately. I went today and everything was very mossy, it needs some serious cleaning. Also, the map location is wrong which sent me through over an hour of tick infested, slug covered, ankle deep with mud, very dense bushwacking. The correct location is: 45.540114,-89.164610. Hey Joel, no, there isn't a whole lot more other than what's posted on here. As far as I know the arete project is still undone, so you should put it down if you end up in the area! I would think there would be other areas like this up north due to the geology of northern Wisconsin. Hike those woods and let us know! Feb 4, 2016

Hey remo is there more potential problems beside just the few posted? I might have a line on a job in the area and it would be fun to develop more and have a lot of projects to work on. Feb 3, 2016
I will be up in the North woods for about a month again this summer. Starting mid-may. Anyone interested in knocking off a few projects at Monico or Mountain, WI?

anyone been there lately because I will live around there for summer, really want to find some place up north to climb May 8, 2014
I climbed here a couple years ago and thought there might be room for a couple new problems... I'm surprised no one has done the project yet. This summer I'll be back in WI for a couple months, staying not far from Monico and will work on it a bit... anyone been there lately? Feb 15, 2012

Is there water or anything else of note on the property? Is there a house or cabin? Apr 13, 2011

Just drove by there today (April 13, 2011) and the site is for sale. I called the agent listed on the sign and the owner is selling the entire 4.27 acres which include the boulders. Asking price is $35K but he is supposedly, "a very motivated seller". Wouldn't it be great if someone could buy it up and actually keep a piece of climbing land north of 29 actually open. Send me a msg if you want more beta on the listing agent - I have their number. Apr 13, 2011

I stopped by here on the way home from up north and had quite a bit of fun. It beats the bouldering at High Cliff. Its also nice and in the shade so relatively cool on 90 degree days. Jul 7, 2007

The Monico Boulders were originally a hang-out training area for a couple of local Rhinelander climbers. I spent a summer in the area and climbed a bunch at Monico. The big long angled arete is a standing project. I cleaned off the moss and needles, but never finished it.
I've never had access issues, but its always a good idea to stay discrete. Mar 23, 2007

No Pete I didn't, I didn't bring my shoes. Guess I didn't expect to find these things. I'm sketchy about the access too...

They looked really good though and it seemed as though there might be a handful of quality problems. Mar 21, 2007

After reading about these boulders, I looked at my topo map and realized that I have seen these boulders too. I remember you could see one heavily graffiti boulder from the highway. I never checked them out, but they look pretty thin and pretty hard! Looks like it could be some decent climbing though. Mar 18, 2007
