Description
Getting There
From downtown Durango, take Main St. or US 550 north to 14th. Main, 550 and 14th all come together in a weird 4-way intersection with a traffic light. Take 14th east (right if heading north on Main, straight if heading north on US 550) a couple hundred yards to a 3-way intersection. Go straight through this intersection and 14th will become Florida Rd. A couple miles east on Florida County Road 250 intersects at a gas station. This station that Burns describes as a Texaco in his guidebook, is now an Exxon. I didn't see the road sign at the intersection, so this station is the landmark. Take a left (north) on CR 250 for 5.5 miles to a turnout on the right. A forest service works facility (lots of trucks in a fenced lot) is readily visible. Park near the facility on the north side, clear of the gates. Haflin Creek trailhead is clearly marked to the east. Follow the trail up and to your right until it splits at a small building used to be, (now just a flat, wide area with a "trail" and an arrow sign per Chris Haynes. The lower falls is to the right, and the upper follows the main trail to the left. Per Chris Haynes: follow trail into the creekbed and upstream for about 1/4 miles. There will be a small amount of scrambling up, around and over "steps" in the creekbed. The upper falls is gained by following the main trail to the left for about 2.5 miles.
