Flying with a crash pad?

Anyone with experience checking a crash pad on a flight? Specifically Southwest (2 free checked bags). Just wondering what the chances are of it getting trashed or something.

As long as it is not beat up already it will be fine. The outer material of mine has never suffered. If it has holes in it or tearing fabric already I am sure they will find a way to do more damage. Started buying $40 snowboard bags to travel with instead of using my nice ones because I had about 3 completely destroyed by handlers.

Bonus: You can pack shit inside of your pad as long as it is well secured. I open up my velcro flaps where the pads actually are and cram them as full of relatively flat objects as I can. I actually got away with some stuff just tucked inside of the folded part one time but that is not a good bet.

Check the size restriction. Usually there's a total for length, height and width. I think your crash pad will exceed that total and you'll spend more to check it. Pads are plenty durable though so I doubt it'll get damaged. I read that with taco pads you can awkwardly roll them up so they are within the total L+H+W measurement. Good luck!

normal size pads(like this) fly without problems on Southwest. its recommended to take off any removable straps. no problems with them getting damaged thus far

Anyone flown Southwest recently that could comment on whether they got hassled for a regular-sized pad?

probably depends on your airport. at least here in austin and El Paso, large Yeti's and crash pads aren't an issue on Southwest.

Is it normal bag cost or a specialty size item cost? Does anyone have an idea of what that cost is?

This link says you can check a maximum size (L +W + H) of 62in for free. Even small pads like the Metolius Session (36" + 26" + 8" = 70") will exceed this. They will still check them, but you have to pay $75.

Did you not notice this post was last active in 2016?

How did you even find this?

Yes, and? It was one of the first results when I googled this question.

On South West, it is treated like a duffel bag so there is no extra charge, and they have not destroyed mine so far so I bet you will be good.

It all depends on the person checking the bag.  There are times when they took it no questions asked and my buddy next to me got hit with a charge for an oversized item... for the same exact pad!

I think you'll be rolling the dice but more often than not I have had my pad checked without any issue.

I can just imagine the guys from the original thread getting a notification for these comments and being like “what the hell, solved this two years ago”. But then again, information is always helpful. Even if it’s two years later.

You sound like an angry person.  You responded to a dead thread, without saying why. Now you're agitated that you are questioned about it.

Do you need a hug?
