If I search for a term (Mammut Nordwand 6000 High) on MP sometimes it will come up with nothing, but if I plug that same term into google along with 'Mammut Nordwand 6000 High mountainproject', then I'll get results.

new site pretty much sucks.

A quick update for you all:

  • We added a spam blocker to forum messages to help thwart spam, especially the CBD gummie spam! This update has been very positive so far and is currently only strict spam checking new users. New users were the primary source of this spam. Our admins will be notified when spam is blocked so we can proactively disable these accounts. [Edit] It might not catch all the spam, but I think this is a good start to lowering the amount of spam.

Thank you. As I'm sure you know, many of the spam links are to Indian-registered accounts and arrive during sub-continent working hours. Operating in a European time zone I see and flag a lot of these whilst you lot are asleep! The number has certainly reduced, though not to zero.

It's a detail, but the name of the "FOR SALE / FOR FREE / WANT TO BUY" subforum all in caps makes the list of active topics feel very spammy and noisy. Getting rid of the caps would bring more calm to the active topic list imho

Bug report: the update map location function on area pages is broken.

Request: Can you please add filtering to the "What's New" Page? We can filter to-do lists so it seems like the code could be reused pretty easily.

It looks like all pictures posted as comments on the 8th of December are not loading for some reason.

Do you have a link I can reference?

Is it possible the site update changed urls for a climb’s detail page? This page links to the El Cautivo climb on Mountain Project but the link is throwing a 404.

Thanks for the report Anna, those links should work now.

I noticed it on the meme thread.

This should be resolved now. Thank for the report.

I found an oddity in the search function:

Only these 8 came up when search was from within MP, and limited to forums. When I searched for "Dreamcatcher" from outside MP ("results within Mountain Project" box), I also got Dreamcatcher posted in the Post Awesome Sport Vids thread, or whatever it's called, in the Sport Climbing sub forum. My assumption is that the MP search is still not searching within the body copy properly. Huge step backwards.

And, thanks for all the effort, and chatting with folks about what's getting done! Means a lot to us riffraff!

Best, Helen

Edit to add, searches used to work with an FA name, if you wanted to hunt up routes that way. Lots of little things like that, which don't work at the moment.

I re-indexed the forums last night, many forum messages had not been indexed resulting in the inability to find them. This was a major improvement on "mammut nordwand 6000" and "dreamcatcher". We also added some general UX improvements based on the suggestions of one of the MP admins   . Improving search is and will continue to be an ongoing process. Search is a complex problem. It's one many people spend their entire career on and it's only one facet of the MP and AP projects. I'm saying that because it's an area we will continually be able to improve on, and we want to make the search experience a great one for the entire community, and for ourselves. My hope is that we are soon able to make search better than it was before and hopefully that's encouraging.

Thanks for the continued feedback and suggestions. And a personal thanks for all the support.

Having to sign in all the time is pretty annoying, is there any plan to have our login cookies last longer?

A few updates

  • Updated search to allow for search of FA on routes and author on forum posts
  • Map tiling updates are plugged in and live. This was a big update and a significant performance improvement on the prior job. The change should be pretty much unnoticeable; the job is for keeping the map tiles current. New changes should be reflected on the map. This should also fix the areas rendering on the tick map as well
  • Removed the redundant green notification on login
  • Still working on improving search, we are working on optimizing the analyzer to give better performance and allow for more expected findings
  • We are also working on improving the admin tools, those changes are not listed here but wanted to make note :)
  • Will work on improving the quality of the sessions

Thanks again for the reports!

Are admins currently able to approve submitted changes/updates? Or is that part of their tools inoperable at the moment?

Thanks for all the updates and hard work Dwayne!

Yes, admins are able to work and use the current tools. We're working with them to fix any bugs that still exist. I'm personally hoping to make these tools more user friendly, while also being considerably easier for engineers to work on. The admins contribute a ton to the community, and we want to make sure they have the tools they need, as well as an optimal experience for contribution and moderation.

Is this in the app? or on the website? Will look into this as quickly as I can.

Noticed this the other day. Clicking the front page pic to stop and look at it doubles up the place info and blocks the ID info.

A request, too? Any possibility of making anonymous stuff not anonymous? In the forums, I mean. The likes, and the ignore user things don't let anyone know who is doing what to whom. Sometimes, that thumbs up gets used for keyboard cowards to jump aboard some pretty mean stuff, and being an ignored user blocks you from participating in threads that person originates. To me, that goes beyond just hiding someone you don't want to read.

Thanks again for the work on this!

Best, Helen

I don't see any details about the content not being editable after a certain period of time by the original owner.  Additionally there is not any information on how I could remove content I submitted after that time is expired.  Maybe that policy can be found elsewhere?
Also any plans to compensate admins for the free labor they provide the company?  Maybe some local/regional community donations to Access Fund or ARI or another non-profit would go a long way to improving the image of this platform.

Are you experiencing contributions that you are unable to edit? A link would be helpful. I recently fixed a bug that was hiding contributor functionality. The site updates did not remove previously existing privileges. To my knowledge, the delete functionality has also not changed since we took ownership.

Tough questions; I really am not able to speak on compensation and legal matters. I'll try to do some work to get some clarity established in the terms though.

Here are some ways onX has given and continues to give back to the community. Hopefully they are useful.

  • Access Stewardship - We devote a portion of our sales every year to secure and protect public access, and to restore and maintain the trails that support outdoor adventures.
  • Outdoor Alliance Partnership - Outdoor Alliance is a national conservation and outdoor recreation advocacy group that includes American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, Access Fund, International Mountain Bicycling Association, Winter Wildlands Alliance, The Mountaineers, American Alpine Club, the Mazamas, Colorado Mountain Club, and Surfrider Foundation. Together, the coalition has notched many victories to protect public lands and waters.
  • Why we exist: Preserve outdoor recreation opportunities for future generations by protecting the land access we have and advocating for more.

I don’t know any Admin for Mt Project who doesn’t consider the job a total privilege. It is volunteer work, as it should be, even though we are already adequately compensated for our work. I see no need for change to the current Admin structure. Who are you to advocate for us?

Though there have been some bumps along the way, this site has done nothing but improve since OnX takeover. Nick couldn’t have picked a better suited parent for the site. The fear of privatization and maximizing quarterly profits over the will of its user base is simply your paranoia. There has been nothing so far to suggest otherwise. OnX gives a lot back to the community. I’d suggest doing a Google search. What, if anything have you done for the community?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
