Van Parking Code Violations in SLC

John Sigmon wrote: I wouldn’t, you already have the answer. Acting dumb and unwilling to follow basic rules and asking neighbors if you can be special and get away with something that clearly pisses them off just makes things worse. Park your big vehicle in front of your own house, preferably in the driveway. |

John Sigmon wrote: Maybe. I'd hope most reasonable neighbors, if they had an issue with someone, would just talk to the person directly. We try to do that. But...oversharing with a neighbor is likely the reason I got a little call from my local code enforcement officer. So, in that case, the neighbor didn't have either the courage or decency (or whatever) to talk to me directly. Trying to shake down a conversation with a neighbor might be exactly what that neighbor was trying to avoid by complaining to code enforcement. And, may ratchet up the situation. And...people treat renters WAY different than homeowners, at least in the neighborhoods that I've lived in in SLC/Sandy. Local renters in my neighborhood are under way more of a microscope. Probably didn't help that a renter burned down a house with a "mysterious" kitchen fire (after some no-knock search warrant history). Probably a meth related fire. Anyhow...the joys of neighborhoods... |

Well thankfully for me, this has sorted out with only a little bit of a headache. The code enforcer for my neighborhood was easy to work with and has had complaints from a particular house for years none of which they took seriously until the homeowners kid's started complaining too after the homeowner died. The calls against us said we were selling van conversions (i wish) and running a lucrative business out of our home (again I wish)- seems my neighbors are just a bit eccentric.... Thankfully now we know who filed the complaint and can bring it up with them directly if there are future issues. Since my van is a bit in the grey area between RV and just a normal car, the code enforcer is providing a letter of exception and should sort out any future issues. Thanks for the help and following along in the saga of neighborhood drama. |

SLC is turning into a NY/CA suburb, its kind of gross (and thats not including the absolutely disgusting air). |

I had a neighbor across the street years ago who claimed the road in front of his house was his parking area only. Not getting it was a public road and anyone could park there. Of course he couldn’t complain to the authorities because he was totally wrong. But we didn’t park there anyway to avoid grief. A weirdo like that is not worth dealing with you won’t be able to reason with them. |

As they should be. |

Molly, if you need an anonymous delivery of a flaming brown paper bag of gote poop onto your neighbor's doorstep, I know a guy. |

Chris Fischer wrote: Hey Chris, The whole saga ended without much fanfare. Turns out the complaints initially came from an old lady across the street and she would call about a code violation a couple times a week. So the code enforcers basically ignored all of her complaints, writing her off as a the crazy old lady she was. But then she died and calls came from her kids about my van. The police stopped by due to the complaints a couple of times and while were thankfully pretty sympathetic to the situation- they knew about the old lady and her list of complaints. They basically said I need to contact the code enforcer of my city (south salt lake) and explain the situation: my vehicle is not an RV and it is street parking. Also, the police said to expect a letter from the code enforcer that had a phone number on it. After calling the phone number this is how I got the whole story about the crazy old lady and her countless reports. They sent police out since the reports were coming from some one else (her kids). The code enforcer basically said not to worry about it, and to expect a letter in case the police show up again. While I didn't receive a letter, I have not had issues since. You can find your code enforcer number and email online under your cities website. My situation resolved itself cause the kids didn't keep calling and now that I know the neighbor I do avoid parking in front of the house. Good luck with your situation! |
