I like I'm sure everyone in this forum has or at one point had an obsession with climbing that has led them to the point to venture outdoors. I have all the gear needed to sport climb and set up top rope however I would like more i instruction, someone to teach me how to climb outdoors safely so I may share this with climbers after me.

Hire a guide or take an instructional course.

Do you have any climbing friends that have more experience who can mentor you? Hiring a guide and taking a course is a great option, but learning at the feet of those more experienced is the traditional way.

Practice your knots and anchors at your local crag, practice more in your room when you aren't climbing and then try it out!

If you love it as much as I did when I was starting, you'll practice by yourself in your house, and even risk looking like an idiot on trees, in front of everyone. I've even seen myself climbing gym routes while slowly waking up. The amount of love you develop for climbing well, without incident, reflects how much you love yourself and your team, so you'll go to lengths to learn thoroughly by multiple methods before stepping off the ground!

Nah. Better to get a lesson.

I'd like the record to state I have yet to read any book to teach me how to climb. It's not rocket science guys. Pay someone to show you the basics, climb with different ppl and learn more, have fun. You don't need to read over dense out of date books that everyone name drops.
Paul what are you doing in trees? Slow down cowboy.

Honestly, the only remotely sketchy thing about that is if you do not know how to properly belay which I hope he does if he climbs in the gym.
To each their own though.

Honestly just go out and do it. Sport climbing is not that hard to figure out. Look up a few youtube videos on anchor cleaning, make sure you know how to belay and not back/Z clip (which you can learn in a gym) and you'll be fine.

MOUNTAINEERING The Freedom of the hills is the only book you will ever need. I think it's in it's 8th edition. Get outside be safe, learn & practice.

Everyone loves to meme those titles, I wonder how many have actually read it. I'll go first, I haven't and don't plan to. You learn better outside climbing and doing than reading a book.

Freedom of the Hills just isn't that helpful, outdated, etc. It's just the Wikipedia page of climbing in paper format.

I actually bought it when I first started climbing, it showed up in the mail and I was like "dude I'm a college drop out, what am I supposed to do with this text book????" Promptly put it on a shelf so everyone knew I was a climber. Never read any of it. 10+ years later still not ded.

Find a local cliff or ice venue to hang out at every single day Perhaps one of the better American alpinists of the time took me climbing a bit as a young teenager as a result of just showing up every day.
