MProj Troll of the Year 2018 goes to Craig Harris, for the seemingly obvious, inflammatory suggestion that climbing is a hobby. He patiently waited till the end of the year to break out the big guns!

For real, should we have a troll of the year quote submission thread next?

But s.price, do you know the origin story of DMT, aka Dingus Milqtoast? Once upon a summer's eve, Craig Harris wrote a very critical letter to Climbing magazine regarding some sort of thing that is now long forgotten. Editor Jeff Jackson responded to the letter, dismissing it's author's concerns as those of a "Dingus Milqtoast." Craig was so amused by the name that he started using it as his online persona.

After learning the basics of climbing (and subsequently learning how to guide the basics) from a VERY safety-conscious organization, I eventually started climbing with Fritz. I learned safety tips from him that I didn’t recall ever learning before.
He’s been very responsive to my comfort level and concerns. Similar to what I read from Sarah above, he helped me rappel with a safety backup for my safety backup. He’s taught me how to use gear I didn’t know how to use before and helped me climb stuff I never had before.
I also appreciate his openness about his successes and failures, including admitting occasional a-holery and struggles with humility. I think all of us could admit to those same things...

I first met Fritz in 1975. I was deathly afraid of heights. Fritz was very compassionate and understanding. He helped me address my fears logically, mainly by switching up my diet to 100% goat milk, which he fed me sip-by-sip from a tiny wooden spoon carved by a troubled teenager. Later, he taught me about protection, including some items I had never heard of like the pink tricam and the bong bong. To help me learn the basics, he once had me simulrap while protecting the pitch with nothing but 420-friendly bong bongs. I vouch for him 100% in anything ever, no matter what.

Fritz can mentor my son anytime!  Super contagious stoke, safe, ability to get a 14year old to listen/learn, and most importantly makes KILLER burritos for sending energy!  Not sure why so many butthurt tryhards dislike the Gotez, but damn! People are people/ Gotez B Gotez!

What is this "butthurt" that Fritz and his buddies seem to know so much about?

I'm framing this one.

So according to my best frenemy Andy Warhol, I'm a narcissist and need to seek help immediately. For the record, I'm not a narcissist; I just look damn good in the mirror. Here, hold my LaCroix while I take a selfie.

While you guys were slogging through your post-holidaze hangover, I put up a boltless thousand-foot 5.10c. I also sold a sweet pair of Chimeras that I won in a rope-coiling competition (60m single in 27 seconds, #guidetricks) and donated the proceeds to the Ohio Climber's Coalition. I also hung out with Pat Ament in Fruita for three hours and talked about the parallels betwen chess, poetry and climbing, and gave him a multitrack recording interface so he doesn't have to keep droppping coin on a studio to get his songs to digital.

As I told Andy in a personal email that he has yet to respond to ... I'm not a dirtbag, I just live in my vehicle, sell plasma twice a week to pay for gas and burrito fixings, go for longetting romantic walks on the beach with my bike, and climb outside twenty days a month. Don't hate tha Playa. .. hate tha Game.

All of that to say, look at my gonads. They're huge.

What are you anonymice doing for the climbing community?

I've climbed with Fritz several times and he's a great dude and an amazing climber. Caught several of his whips on a blue metolius on a 12d in Durango so I can tell you he knows how to place bomber gear, as well as climbing pretty damn hard too. All of y'all talking shit ought to actually meet the dude before talking down to him. Have a beer/bowl with him and you're opinion will surely change.

I've climbed with "fill in the name of your choice" and he/she is a great person.  Smoke some pot with him/her and you will really like him/her.  What?

This is not a defense or what anybody disagrees with.  Hello?

People are a bit annoyed, at the least, that he made a poor plan that included deliberately bringing mechanical equipment into the wilderness, which is generally prohibited, lit a fire, also prohibited, and left a bunch of trash (yes, that is what intentionally abandoned gear is).   People might shrug this off to poor judgment and a plan falling through and support him in that he made it out ok.  But, then he comes in and then blogs about it.  "Hi.  I did some stupid shit.   I make good burritos and smoke a lot of pot.  Yo Yo.  Brotha!"  Not to mention his knowledge that rescue personnel might have very well headed in to find him at the risk of their own lives to save him from his shenanigans, which they began to do.  What if one of his rescuers got killed while attempting to drag his ass out of there?   He reminds me of Trump.  He has done some good things and some really dumb things.  His supporters prop him up no matter what.  And he talks a lot about himself and how great he is.

I stopped reading his posts and threads altogether.  Wind bag full of himself.

Guy breaks the law, disrespects the LNT ethic, and has the brazen audacity to post about it to make himself the center of attention...
And the circlejerkers come out en masse to defend how awesome of a pot smoker he is and other irrelevant back slapping.

You should all take a long hard look in the mirror.

The wilderness protection act of 1964 is one of the best things our government has ever done for us, and this whole event is disrespectfully pissing all over it.

Not cool at all, and if you have a single word to say in support of it, YOU are part of the problem.

I could be wrong but the Black canyon is not a designated wilderness. It is a national park, which is much different.

Who really cares. He had a good adventure. Didn't die or hurt anyone else.

I don't know Fritz but I would gladly smoke a bowl and share a rope with him.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
