The Sharp End (Not really a review)

I thought that the part on Steph's Solo on the Diamond was too short... would have like to seen more on her preparation, climbing the Cattle Route and more footage of her soloing, also thought Dean's Solo on the Eiger was too short... Also, thought the movie Kicked Ass for entertainment value.

Although I thought First Ascent was a more well made film over all, and my 13 month old Daughter seems to like First Ascent better too.. ( :

My favorite parts were when Hanks Mastif spued on the carpet... Also, my Czech friends love beer and when I heard the guy go "in Czech we drink beer a lot, not a lot a lot, but mmmm eight tens beers day is standard" I was rolling and immediately cracked a beer and chugged it down... also,.... for good measure.

LOL

Props, best review of the Movie I have read...

Peace

I thought the movie was great, Sender always does a great job of adding a compelling story to the climbing footage, which is also top quality. The movie made me appreciate the amazing things that those climbers are doing without feeling at all like I was missing out by not participating. The only thing I didn't like was the same thing other people have been saying, not enough climbing. I know the cameras are hard to get, but only about five seconds of Steph Davis soloing the NF of Castleton is too short! Even if there are no cuts, I would have liked to stay with the climbs in the film longer. Take out all the BASE and there would have been a lot more time for climbing. Some of the best climbing is in the extras. Still, loved it, can't wait for the next one. El Cap!

I always laugh at Ammon McNeely's "I would rather live 40 years of fun and excitement and exhilaration and whoooooo rather than 80 years of la de da de da."

...on a mountain of cocaine....

ditto on the 'needs more climbing' comments.

Movie opens great with the 'knot protection' climbing in Europe, then gradually gets more and more distracted with other things (BASE, etc). That stuff is cool for a mix in, but to me the title "the sharp end" indicates a focus on just that - and the movie lost that focus by the end, and subsequently lost some of my attention.

reminded me (and had some of the same footage) of the trailer for Banff's "radical reels"

I definitely lose interest during the non climbing parts. Although I've seen it dozens times now. I like the concept of the film though and I don't mind how they strayed a bit from climbing. The whole damn movie needed to big longer though!! I now have added Hanks word "Chundered" as a perminent fixture in my volcabulary haha and I wish the extras were a part of the actual movie.

the only way it could have been better:
Longer.
More Hank.
More of the Czech Crew.
And Timmy O'neill should have been in there just because he makes my day haha.

Maybe they should make a movie about the wrath of destruction left in a climbers wake when they die doing this stuff...i.e. soloing, base jumping, extreme runout climbing, etc...

I guarantee that when it does blow up in your face and you're lucky enough to be alive to deal with the consequences - you won't be saying fuck it it was worth it. and if you aren't alive, anyone who cared about you will wish you cared more about trying to live well then trying to live on the edge of death.

hell if you live they'll be saying the same thing because they will be taking care of you for a longgggg time.

I think you are right , lets all stop climbing , base jumping , kayaking , downhill biking and doing everything that is too dangerous!
We need to live long time!

i never said stop climbing or biking or whatever. there will always be people out there risking it all and there will always be people who appreciate it....but there is a big difference between climbing with ropes/protection and soloing or X rated runouts or headpointing. I'm willing to bet most haven't really thought through the full consequences of their actions. all the hype and mystique rings hollow when it is someone close to you who doesn't make it.

The Sharp End was awesome. Best quotes:
"Tower jumping.. is my life"
"If you fall you can become legend, or you end up in hospital with broken leg, which is also funny"
"I think it was the 100 foot whipper that got my unpsyched"
"My dog just chundered everywhere"

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
