Just curious if anyone knows the location of the airplane wreckage from a couple weeks ago… somewhere near the ridgline of Shadow Canyon?

Seems like a lot less work to just go to a dispensary.

Two dead. Father (43) and his daughter (3). That's not a typo.

I share your curiousity.

I'm also curious why you're curious. Any intentions?

I've a general idea of where I heard/read it crashed, but haven't seen any specific gps coords.

Personally, I'd be eager to go observe the crash site. Not morbidly eager, as the tragic deaths have me wanting to respect the sancticty of life and honor the tragedy of loss.

But absent considerations of death, a plane crashing in the urban-adjacent wilderness and the ensuing search operations is just a fascinating phenomenon. I generally wouldn't have expected any mystery or searching necessary for an event like that.

Let me know if you're thinking of going on an explore and want some company. We can chat about whether that would be ethical and/or the most responsible way to do that. Might be happy to join you on an adventure.

Also, presuming that's a joke about Upper Lake Merced and comically and facetiously presumed intentions:

1) oof dude thats a dark jump to make in this specific context, but kudos to a magnificent joke of sardonic referential humor.

2) I keep telling y'all, the new Upper Lake Merced cash grab is taking absurd promo money from these sportsbooks companies with a formulaic and legal surebetting scheme, and then walking away with the cash. Buy weed or pay rent or put it in your kid's college fund. Whatever. It's free money you can easily take from terrible people.

Scoff or grimace all you want, but I snagged $3000 in February while waiting for my job to begin, and used it to pay rent (to my absolute scumbag shitbird psycopath landlord) and buy food.

Meanwhile LinkedIn's algorithm is telling me I should consider applying to work as a risk analyst at FanDuel, because with my proficiency in mathematical reasoning, I can get paid $150k starting salary to figure out how to ruin lives and prey on the weak!

It's horrible.

Warren Buffet called legalized sports gambling a tax on stupidity, and he wasn't wrong.

Any company that will offer you a free $1000 voucher just to take a taste.... there is no way you can afford to hand out $1000 in real play money vouchers to each new customer unless your average profit per customer is well over $1000, and also you would likely expect the vast majority of your promo takers to be too stupid, impulsive, and/or greedy to just convert it straight to cash at 70% with surebetting, and then stop entirely.

Less than 5% of gamblers make up 50% of house profits.

The entire business model is geared towards finding potential whales and bleeding them dry. Addicts finance the entire industry. Vegas slot parlors at 3am on a Tuesday night is some of the saddest shit in the world.

This piece about how the industry courts gambling addiction is sad and enlightening. propublica.org/article/draf…

I'm not aware of any backstory to the crash.  Read the link.  It seems to be just a horrible accident.  Andrew was just trying to be funny. Brent was just being a tool.

Summary:

The Crash

A small plane crashed just North of Eldo in the dark late evening/early night.

ATC only noticed them suddenly go dark on the transponder.

A search and rescue effort was mobilized. The public was notified and involved. Crash site was found within hours.

2 dead. 43 year old private pilot, and 3 year old daughter.

Now dead pilot had reportedly been scolded by another pilot during their 3 hours of flying just before the crash that he was flying dangerously. Investigation continues but it all looks pretty straightforward - Reckless joyride gone wrong.

The Joke

Dick Stone came to the MP forums with a vague request about the crash site. Pretty clearly has some morbid curiousity to know more about the crash and maybe visit the location - or just know if it's near the crags for whatever awareness reasons.

Andrew Gram, being what the kids would call a "cool guy", likes to make snarky one-liner jokes and inflammatory comments.

He made a pretty funny joke referencing the Upper Merced Lake legend/saga. The story goes: A Mexican Drug Cartel smuggler aircraft crashed into a lake in remote Yosemite, loaded to the gills with bricks of weed. Yos dirtbags and valley denizens at the time spread the word and beat the clean up crew to the crash site, pilfered bunches of the weed, sold it, smoked it, bought cars, partied, laughed all the way to the bank. Legendary.

Andrew was presumably jokingly implying that Dick Stone wanted to visit the crash site of a presumably reckless dead father and his victimized now dead toddler in order to search for pirate booty.

The Rerail Derail

Kelly, being Kelly, bored and gregarious, came in with 40MB worth of thoughts and concerns.

Kelly is genuinely eager to know more about the crash and enjoys adventure more than projecting. He's been thinking about going to look for the crash site while he has ample free-time, having believed the legend of the dirtbag to the point of degenerative apathy.

Kelly thought it might be fun to go on an explore with some likeminded explorers.

Meanwhile Kelly has a lot of anger at THE CULTURE especially the deregulation of dangerous and predatory industries. Kelly also has no money and realized he can just take money from scheming business analysts (because he used to be a scheming business analyst, before he got tired of hating himself). Like when you get a new credit card and earn the $500 new customer bonus, then cut the card in half and toss it in the trash and cancel the account. Tiger blood! Winning!

So, Kelly, eager to share this knowledge of readily available "free" money, (also because referral bonuses are also free money and should be gamed through social collusion), but he's reluctant to risk triggering crippling gambling addictions in the more vulnerable amidst the audience, took the opportunity to point again to the similarity between the Upper Merced Lake "easy money thanks to cartel mistakes" and the Sportsbooks-are-now-legal "easy money thanks to cartel mistakes".

The Drift

Gambling Addiction is a hell beyond imagination.

There's been a quick and appropriate dialogue emphasizing how no one should touch a casino or sportsbook without a deep understanding of just how rigged the games are against you.

It's not luck. It's math. And it's designed to bleed you dry and leave you with nothing, and to laugh while your children starve.

The Rerail

Andrew, who I worry about, made another dark joke acknowledging the sufficiency and excess of the derail. The dead have been eaten and the survivors fed. The Forlorn Hope of returning to a linear thread has been envoyed.

Slim, confused and nonplussed, requested a summary, and, as he's always had the spirit of an educator, Kelly wrote up this hopefully clarifying summary.

This concludes our scenic detour.

We hope you enjoyed your flight.

We know you have a choice when traveling the MP Forums, and we thank you for choosing Kelly Airlines.

FYI tomorrow (10/22) a lot of the S. Flatirons trails will be closed due to dangerous overhead helicopter operations (presumably removing the wreckage). I actually was able to spot it from the top of a scramble yesterday. It’s a pretty remote spot and likely not visible from any of the trails. I have a photo  but you can barely tell what it is

Brent Kelly · · Boulder, CO · Joined Jul 2010 · Points: 186

Man, I almost hope there was an aircraft failure, because otherwise, just hard to imagine how you end up like that without being just criminally stupid.

Thanks for the heads-up, Sam. Glad you had an interesting scramble.

Some reprobate suggested I want to know the location of the crash site so that I can plunder the wreckage.  Really!?   I’m a lifelong pilot, frequently flying my plane near the Flatirons, and just curious to learn more about  the circumstances.  I don’t want to hike to the actual site to view a terribly sad and morbid scene.
My mistake for even asking this question, ignoring the fact that its answer could draw pathetic “lookin-loos” to a sight that will only be a reminder to the tragic loss of a innocent young child and father.

Hey Dick, good to hear from you.

In your parlance, Andrew would be the reprobate. He suggested you were looking to score some weed.

You are familiar with the troll dynamics here in the forums, yes? It's 30% jokes in here, 40% of which are inflammatory and psychotic.

I would be the "pathetic lookin-loo" [sic], and I appreciate your pathos. I have no interest in celebrating or gawking at the scene of a death, but, much like you, I am fascinated by the dynamics of plane crash.

I think your mistake was in not explaining upfront why you were asking such a loaded question.

Hope you're having an enjoyable night.

If you learn more about the crash investigation, please share your interesting findings here. I'd be eager to review them.

Cheers and happy safe flying!

P.S.

Have you considered going by Rich instead of Dick?

Edit to add:

Strikout the name suggestion. I presumed it was a fake name. I've known climbers who said their "mountain names" were Tripp Stone and Buck Rock, so, yeah.

To George: Yes, I do think it's a loaded question, when "Why are you asking?" is a very reasonable followup question.

To Dick:

My apologies if I ruffled feathers or came across as insulting! I presumed incorrectly on many things, and was trying to thread the needle between sincerity and silliness. Your name is quite badass.

You think that Dick was asking a loaded question? It was a simple request for more information about an incident close to popular climbing areas. The drivel generated by some of the lurkers herein is just bizarre. Btw Dick is an intelligent, accomplished, sincere person.

Dick Stone · · Boulder · Joined Mar 2006 · Points: 255

Thank you George!

Kelly I have been called “Rich” by my early generation of friends, but alas I’m stuck with Dick Stone !   Yes it’s a real name and think I should have been an action figure movie star with it !  🤣

Brent Kelly · · Boulder, CO · Joined Jul 2010 · Points: 186

Hey Dick! My apologies if I ever came across as insulting or demeaning. Merely my attempts at jovial silliness.

Rich Stone and Dick Stone are both badass names, especially if they're official!

(When I was told by 'Buck Rock' to choose a Mountain Name, I chose 'Jimmy Marmot', and it's still my preferred appellation. Might have to make it legal someday  .)

I do think it helps to be verbose and explicit about your reason for curiosity around sensitive topics like this, but otherwise...

Didn't mean to imply that you were a deplorable looky-loo! I just don't have much worry about corpses. It's tragic, but the dead are dead, and looking at where they died changes nothing other than filling your head with gore-filled memories and imaginings. I don't want gore-filled memories and imaginings. I dislike watching horror movies. But I do think there's value in not shying away from the brutal realities of danger and death.

But also, as was impressed on us at engineering school (at least at Columbia and especially at Notre Dame), accidents are preventable, and, as educated engineers, society was trusting us to design and build safe and responsible systems and devices.

Anytime something goes completely FUBAR, I'm eager to viscerally understand what happened and learn (and to personally judge, productively).

And I've never stood at the scene of a *recent* crash and studied the wreckage. Strong emotional sense memories of visiting the Glen Edwards Memorial. But that felt like a patch of dirt where something once happened, not a crash site.

I think when we visit the scenes of tragedy and keep our hearts and minds in the right place, we deepen our empathy and appreciation for the frailty and ephemeralness of our lives and our loves. Teaches us to cherish actual living, not just subsisting and thrill-seeking.

And I like hiking and goal-oriented adventures. So I figured, two butterflies with one net.

Permit me an inquiry:

You're a pilot, yeah?

What do you think of Lillienthal's "Sacrifices must be made."

I'm not sure I agree with the context, but damn what a champion of a thing to say...

p.s. George, not to be combative or pedantic, but, to be pedantic: lurkers don't produce bizarre drivel, as they definitively observe without engaging. Trolls and psychos produce bizarre drivel. I'm not a troll, in that I don't enjoy confusing or upsetting people. I find trolling bizarre as well. I might be somewhat psychotic, in that I believe we should all still write our thoughts in paragraphs and pages and be playful and silly and kind and intelligent while we do.

I am a man of letters!

Like Teddy Roosevelt!

Or Ann Landers!

Dick Stone · · Boulder · Joined Mar 2006 · Points: 255

Hi Brent…no worries on the misunderstanding !  (of which I didn’t mean to transgress from a forum about climbing!)

I think in the context of the times, the words Lillienthal supposedly spoke about sacrifices at his pending demise were akin to our modern Nike verse of “Just Do It”.

mortal risk of early aviation was well accepted in the name of science, just like Lewis and Clark, or all the risks the astronauts and test pilots took leading up to landing on the moon.

That “age of exploration” must have been a great one to experience, and where would we be if these explorers didn’t risk their lives in the name of science and progress!

I love it! Thanks Dick!

There's so much to think about in the space between

"Sacrifices must be made."

 &

"Life is fleeting."

&

"Was it worth it?"

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
