$50 for toe bails?

What's the point of going into a Petzl system where the parts are replaceable if the spare parts make it cheaper to just buy a new set of crampons?

It's a piece of wire. I try to replace mine every other year. Yes, I've had them snap on me. (As I'm sure a lot of us have.) But if it's going to cost $50 for toe bails and $75 for fresh front points. 🤷🤷🤷

It is just better to buy a different model pair that you can cannibalize for spare parts, since the price of spares is outrageous. I use the toe bail from my Irvis Hybrids as my backup for my Darts. Then I also have the Irvis for mountaineering. Higher upfront cost but better long-term value. Granted, I have a half dozen pairs of crampons, so for folks with only one or two this may be tough to swallow.

None of their crampons come with the small bail as standard 😢. I do the same for heel pieces and linking bars, but the small bail fits my boots better.

Literally just had this conversation and emailed Petzl. They blamed tariffs but I also think they do a generic percentage profit margin across the board that jacks up our prices for spare parts in the states.

If only someone started making their own here in the states, like Beartooth Alpine was doing, but just solid usable replacement parts.

BD is horrible for this too. Theirs are nearly $50 each! Lots of folks swear by them so I thought of giving them a try until I saw the price.

$25 each/50 for the pair.  Same price. Welcome to 2026, and the rest of your life paying for things, nothing is every going to get cheaper again. (as I wave my fist in the air!).

When things get REALLY bad, buying toe bails is going to seem like a very silly thing to worry about.

9.99 a gal for diesel in Cali today in a few stores, maxed out the displays on the pump....yeah, when we can't get food delivered out of California to other states, yes, a pair of toe bails will be the silly thing to worry about.  (also water, and global warming=less ice, and war in Europe, and the Middle East, and this crazy president we have here in the states, and and and.....)

Outrageous.  Also with Petzl crampons you really should always carry a spare toe bail since they tend to break.  (Coming from someone who really likes Petzl crampons, and Petzl in general).

Another option: stock up next time you're in Europe/Canada.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. They're ~ 25 Euros overhere.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
