New York City to the Gunks without a car possible?

two 80 dollar ubers and a roundtrip train ride.. at what point does just renting a car for a day start to be a better option lol

One of my partners lived in Manhattan for over 40 years. He always did a weekend rental when he went to the Gunks.

From Poughkeepsie train station to the Gunks area - no uber at all? I just checked Lyft, I can get a pickup in 8 minutes, and the ride is like 80 bucks.

Good luck! Just because the Lyft app says the ride is available doesn't mean the drivers won't simply cancel the ride and wait for an easier fare.

At some point y'all rich folks should just take your private helicopters there. If you donate enough money I am sure you could get the Mohonk Rangers to clear out a landing area in the lower lot, and then carry you up the stairmaster.

I did this quite a bit before I got a car. Here's my beta -

  • The Trailways station shares a lot with the Village Grind coffee shop. I've picked up a ride there before from some locals fairly quickly
  • A cab from the lot is $30 (or at least it was a year ago). You ask the people inside the bus station to call one for you. Sometimes there's a cab ready, other times you need to wait a bit. You can probably call a ride in while you're on the bus
  • Cabs pick up from either Trapps lot for the same price, but you won't have signal everywhere
  • The lots are decent places to find a ride back to town. A lot of climbers are taking the one road back through NP
  • I haven't tried Uber but I wouldn't really rely on it outside of peak leaf season
  • Many people sport climbing in NYC gyms also trad climb and have cars, it's best to make friends :-)

Bro is talking about spending over $100 bucks each way for a day trip and then gets mad when I point out that's insanely expensive for the vast majority of people.

Maybe instead of crying about it, try wiping away your tears with a stack of Benjamins.
