My fiance and I are taking a huge cross country road trip and we want to stop and climb in some places, in this case, somewhere in the stretch between and around Richmond VA and Charlotte NC.
In particular, we are looking for a crag that has many routes in a small area so we can get many climbs in, is popular so we're not just by ourselves in the middle or nowhere, is fairly easy to tie top rope or lead anchors, and is not too far out of our way (hence the Richmond to Charlotte constraint). I see that in Richmond there is Manchester wall; I am looking for something a bit more than this, for reference.
Pilot Mountain State Park, Crowders Mountain State Park, Rocky Face Park(County Park). There are some options in the Richmond area, but I'm not all that familiar with them.
Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area would be a great stop for you, with 60+ rock-climbing routes... and the rock is literally at the parking area. Learn more at rockyfacepark.com.
Pilot Mountain is where most people in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas learn to climb outside since it’s close and has a lot of sport routes. It’s not a destination by any stretch of the imagination, but there are good routes from 5.6 to 5.13a.
There are plenty of classic moderates in the 5.7-5.9 grades to lead like Pole Dancing, Chicken Bone, and Black Rain. Groups will also set up top ropes in the Three Bears Gully and Little Amphitheater, but if this is your plan go on a weekday since it can be busy on weekends.
The rock quality is variable, so wear a helmet. Newer climbers and out of state visitors are sometimes spooked by the bolting, which can be more run out than they’re used to.
