Hi, I recently got into climbing this last summer and have been really missing rock and getting tired of just gym climbing. Does anyone know of some good sport/trad places to climb near Bozeman during the winter? Thanks!

Try Gallatin Canyon for sport climbing or Hyalite for ice climbing in winter. Enjoy!

Scorched Earth in Gallatin should go if it isn't actively snowing. Is it better than being at Spire all day? That's a different question...

In terms of sport, Under the sea in Bear Canyon goes year round just be careful on the log. It’s a bit of a drive but Natural bridge is almost always a few degrees warmer than other crags in the winter time. For trad, Practice rock in Highlight is good if you get the sun angles right.

Other option is Winter Wall on the Madison -- south facing and no poison ivy or snakes in the winter :-)

Madison river area is your safest option. Allenspur cooks in the sun all afternoon. Practice Rock south face routes. I’ve climbed Bozeman pass in the winter.  Under the sea wall goes but the approach can be snowy. Scorched earth and storm castle in gallatin canyon. I’ve climbed cracks at pipestone and homestake pass in the winter. You can climb those choss routes on the M trail. Red Cliff campground and Buck Creek are mostly south facing crags 1 hour south of town. Natural bridge is the best winter sport spot 1.5 hours away. You can drive 3 hours to Cody and catch dry rock on a warm winter day. You can drive 5-6 hours to sinks canyon or wild iris which goes all winter. You can pretty much climb anywhere in the winter on a calm sunny day, you just might have to deal with some snow.

This winter a lot of routes are dry, practice rock in hyalite is a close by fun area

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
