Creating a thread to help facilitate the finding of a mentor for mentees - regardless of your level. I've seen a lot of desire for both people looking for mentors and people looking to give back by serving as a mentor - figured having a dedicated place for that makes sense. You're encouraged to +1 the folks you know posting in here that you can vouch for.

MENTEES:

  • This is not a place to find a rope gun for a day. This is a place to find a meaningful friendship with someone else, in the process of growing. Whether that looks like upping your performance, expanding your tool set, or just finding your footing and voice in the sport, it's about changing and growing.
  • Hold yourself accountable - follow through, commit, be a good partner, communicate your needs and your boundaries, and don't blindly trust your mentor - make sure you actually are understanding what's going on. What matters most is everyone going home at the end of the day.

MENTORS:

  • This is not a place for you to find a pack mule for the day. This is an opportunity to continue to grow and develop the sport. This is an opportunity for growth for you as well - this should be a two-way relationship. You have something to gain from everyone you encounter.
  • Hold yourself accountable - be responsible, kind, patience, act in good faith and communicate effectively. Respect boundaries and don't recklessly endanger those that are trusting you. You have a heightened level of responsibility here - make sure you're acknowledging and accepting that. What matters most is everyone going home at the end of the day.

Here's a potential template for your post, but feel free to structure it however you'd like. If you see someone you're interested in connecting with, send them a message through their account.

Tal M · · Denver, CO · Joined Dec 2018 · Points: 6,417

Name (if not your MP account name): Tal

Role (Mentor/Mentee): Mentor

Age, Pronouns: 28, He/They/Whatever

Climbing experience (specify indoors/outdoors if relevant): Roughly 6 years of experience climbing. Sport to 5.13, Trad to 5.12, Bouldering to V7, Big Walls, Alpine, 4 years of route development, a bit of ice climbing and dry tooling - I try and dabble in just about everything. No certifications, but have served as a mentor in the route development space in official and unofficial capacities for the last few years

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: West Denver based, and I climb in CCC, Staunton, and the South Platte most often. NTM a bit in the winter, and sporadically in Eldo/BoCan/Flatties/etc.

Availability: Just weekends for now

Why I am pursuing this: I've gained an unbelievable amount of knowledge, help, and wonderful days out shared with my mentors over the years, and I want to pay it forward. I wouldn't be where I am as a climber, or person, without their patience and guidance. I think it's important that we leave things better than we found them, and that applies to our fellow climbers within our community as well. Additionally, I've learned something from every mentor role I've ever served in, so this is a big opportunity for me to grow and improve as well.

What I provide for this: General enthusiasm, a nauseating amount of climbing media and local climbing area knowledge, and a menagerie of MP shitposts to sift through. Realistically, the main thing I can offer that the average person may not be able to is route development knowledge and opportunities, but I'm happy to provide whatever I can, regardless if it's route development related or not.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee: Follow through, active communication, and a safe belay. Ideally you'll already be a good lead belayer and know how to clean an anchor outdoors - but if not, feel free to still reach out and we can get there. Be passionate. Have things you're excited about and ask to do them. I've got my hand in a lot of pots, so it's a bit of a "hungry mouths get fed" situation - if you reach out regularly, we'll get out regularly. If you're looking for me to initiate opportunities, it probably won't happen. Be honest with me and yourself, under promising and over delivering is better than the inverse.

What I am looking to avoid in a mentor/mentee: I'm open to most things, the only thing I don't have much patience for is bad/nonexistant communication, being a shitty person, or constantly being late. I don't care how hard you do or don't climb, what your resume looks like, etc. We're just out here to have fun!

Other notes: Huge bonus points if you provide baked goods/snacks/are willing to drive occasionally

Outdoors: top rope up to 11d, sport lead/belay up to 11a, multipitch following and lead for sport did 7 or 8 pitch at devils head (revelation route swap leads and others), follow multipitch trad! Have led at the creek and want to get past fear of leading more trad in front range. Proficient with sport anchors and know how to build gear anchors although could use tips. Also just want to get better outside. Current mentality for leading is little scaredy. Would like to be generally more knowledgeable and efficient about basic self rescue scenarios

I’ve bouldered outside before but not really tried

Indoor:

V4/v5 on really good day for bouldering. I don’t boulder enough. Looking to try and do some more board climbing

lead up to 11c onsight. Will top rope general in 11s and low 12s falling a bunch on good day

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags:

south Denver generally. I climb at movement gyms indoors mainly golden or Englewood

outdoors I like CCC, devils head, Staunton, north table if weather bad, bocan if have whole day

Availability:

Fri sat and sun outside and weekdays gym

Why I am pursuing this:

Listed above + looking for more folks to climb with

What I provide for this:

Basic knowledge to help you send stuff. Maybe new friend

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee:

Trusted climbing partner. Semi consistent but not avail every weekend

Mike Kubes · · Fort Collins · Joined May 2014 · Points: 568

Name (if not your MP account name): Mike Kubes

Role (Mentor/Mentee): Both – Mentor/Mentee

Age, Pronouns: 35 – He/Him

Climbing experience (specify indoors/outdoors if relevant): I’ve been climbing for a little over 10 years. Spent a few seasons working as an SPI, have taken the Rock Guide Course, hold a Diploma in Mountain Medicine, but shifted gears to pursue academics instead of guiding. I feel like I’ve never been a “hard” climber, usually leading in the .11’s sport, would like to break into the .12’s sport climbing and currently lead trad up to 5.9ish. I have done some route development, love moving efficiently over big terrain but also enjoy single pitch days.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: I’m based in Fort Collins. The Poudre Canyon is my main climbing area, mostly due to its proximity. St Varain, Boulder Canyon, Estes, Lumpy and Vedauwoo are other spots I frequent.

Availability: Variable. I work a rotating schedule of weekends and weekdays, plus I’m also in school.

Why I am pursuing this: Looking to expand my pool of partners. Meet new folks. Share knowledge and learn from others. I’d like to continue to get out on a consistent basis, while meeting others for some larger objectives I have planned later this summer.

What I provide for this: A variety of formal and informal knowledge/training related to climbing. Patience and empathy. A passion for climbing and being outside.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee: I’m not too concerned about what grades you climb or experience level. Communication while climbing and planning climbing outings is an important factor to me. Empathy and understanding. Attentive belays.

What I am looking to avoid in a mentor/mentee: Poor communication. Frequent last-minuet bailing. Inattentive or unsafe belaying.

Name (if not your MP account name): Mike

Role (Mentor/Mentee): Mentee

Age, Pronouns: 37, he/him

Climbing experience (specify indoors/outdoors if relevant): I’ve climbed consistently indoors for 8 or so years – mostly top rope, but proficient leading as well. Generally climbing 5.11, though more like 5.10 on lead. Pushing into 5.12 indoors on top rope.  Limited outdoor experience, exclusively top-rope.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: Denver, but happy to drive wherever.

Availability: Weekends. I’m also off every other Friday. Potentially some weekdays in the late afternoon/evening for crags close to Denver.

Why I am pursuing this: I just moved to Denver and am looking to develop connections for consistent climbing and a broader community. As most of my experience is indoors, I want/need to gain knowledge to expand my climbing outdoors – willing to try any style. Eventually, I’d like to transfer that knowledge to others as well.

What I provide for this: General willingness to learn and enthusiasm for the sport. I’m happy to drive, provide snacks and cold drinks, and buy gear as needed.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee: Individuals who prioritize safety. Other than that, just be cool.

What I am looking to avoid in a mentor/mentee: Don’t be a jerk? Seems like a reasonable request.

Bumping this because I know many of us are about to lose 60% of our partners due to them dissociating from their ACLs on a blue Mogul run and/or the allure of fresh board benchmarks and a warm climbing gym.

Climbing experience (specify indoors/outdoors if relevant): 3 years climbing on rock and indoors. Outdoor I’m breaking into 5.12 on gear, I’m 12- on bolts and v6/7ish bouldering. I’m a proficient trad and multipitch climber and am looking to level up in the alpine and ice worlds! Have lead WI3 on a multi and got to practice v threads there too, but ice and snow travel exp very limited.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: based out of Denver. Eldo, flatirons, Staunton, south platte, rmnp etc for rock

Availability: weekends bigger objectives, Denver area cragging weekdays

Why I am pursuing this: To meet some good climbing folks! I want to find good partners first and any mentorship would be invaluable. I really want to focus on alpine next summer and am also very interested in route development. For winter I’m really psyched to get out on ice and also to learn the basics of snow travel and avy safety. I want eventually to be climbing technical terrain on bigger snowy mountains but obv a long way to go there

What I provide for this: a psyched and safe, motivated partner. I too value someone who’s reliable and on time

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee: someone who’s down to get out a bunch and have fun/good attitude

Climbing experience (specify indoors/outdoors if relevant):

Climbing for 15 years. Learned trad down in the gunk's and have been climbing trad and sport in both a crag and alpine setting for 10 years. Climb up to about 5.11( when the stars align ) on gear and 5.12ish on bolts. I also like to climb ice but have done less of that since moving to Colorado since the rock season is pretty much all year but i lead up to wi4+/5- when at my peak.. probably more comfortable in the 3+/4- range these days. I'm also pretty comfortable on snow couloirs and mountaineering objectives and feel confident on moderate alpine mixed/ice routes.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: Boulder/denver area any crages in the day trip range of here are my bread an butter.. ( vedauwoo to south platte and everthing in between. )  RMNP is my favorite place in the state to climb but I don't' get out as much as i want.. Eldo and Bocan are my most visited areas.

Availability: Weekends but could be talked into a weekday for something particularly cool.

Why I am pursuing this:

I see unhinged stuff at the crags all the time and i think alot of people are out there just going for it without having the skills.. I would love to share the knowledge i've picked up from books and my own mentors  as well as personal experience.

What I provide for this: A stoke partner who really enjoys sharing knowledge. Someone who wants to see people have a good time but come home to there family after.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee:

Someone who is friendly and eager to learn with a genuine interest in getting outside and climbing safely and has some good stoke to be there

What I am looking to avoid in a mentor/mentee:

People who want to send it recklessly.. I don't need to be part of another complicated rescue from RMNP because you were unnecessarily reckless.

At the risk of thread drift, can you say more about this situation? Maybe a little group mentoring opportunity

Don't solo the north chimney if  you're not 100% solid.. watching someone come peeling out of that thing while i was roping up was quite an experience.. Had a lot of us running all over the cirque and coordinating with rangers and carrying them to a spot we could get them evaced out.. ( they lived)  Accidents happen but i think making good choices to minimize this is important because it has a huge impact on alot of people..

Role (Mentor/Mentee): Mentee

Age, Pronouns: 26 he/him

Climbing experience (specify indoors/outdoors if relevant):

Indoors: Several months of bouldering up to "V5", infrequent toprope, a two-day lead belay course at my gym. Haven't gym climbed in well over a year.

Outdoors: Two easy sport leads, one with a guide a while ago, the other more recently. A cumulative few months of bouldering, V-easy thru V1.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: CCC, BoCan, any front range crags. Single pitch sport

Availability: Flexible. "Does [day and time] work?" Yes!

Why I am pursuing this: Unfortunately, whether I decide to give climbing a real shot or not, I will still die one day. Despite my fear, not trying will ultimately be way more painful and humiliating than panicking on the wall and wasting someone's morning a thousand times. It'd be very silly of me to have a desire to climb, buy a bunch of climbing gear, live next to all this world class rock, and never touch any of it because I was too scared of heights, too anxious to try to find a climbing partner, etc. I also would love to introduce my friends to climbing and get them hooked, but to do that I need to establish a solid amount of competence myself.

What I provide for this: My very flexible schedule, for one. Thanks to my own experiences with green belayers, I am painfully aware of how miserable and horrifying being belayed by a noob is. I have a list of "do not"s long enough to ensure my catches will be safe and hopefully comfortable. I have a basic sport rack with 10 QDs and a Grigri. Can provide snacks and/or brews if necessary. Watching me fail will hopefully be pretty amusing.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee: Safety consciousness, patience, someone who would enjoy standing around to watch a grown man flounder and Elvis-leg his way up easy/moderate climbs.

What I am looking to avoid in a mentor/mentee: Safety negligence, impatience, someone who would dislike standing around to watch a grown man flounder and Elvis-leg his way up easy/moderate climbs.

Great idea, Tal! Thank you for setting this thread up.

Name (if not your MP account name): I'll share offline. I prefer to keep my name off the open forum.

Role (Mentor/Mentee): Mentor

Age, Pronouns: 50, she/her

Why I am pursuing this:  I don't have a huge amount of time for new partners, but what spurred me to post here is that I would like to provide an option for anyone - of any identity - who would be most comfortable with a female mentor. The male mentors in this thread look awesome and I'd climb with any of them, so I'm not trying to knock on them in any way or be divisive based on gender. But there weren't any female mentors yet and that can be important to some folks, so here I am. I also want to promote learning and safety generally in the climbing community. I have had the benefit of learning from many wonderful people. I know it's harder to break into the climbing community now than it was when I was first starting out because so many people are coming into the sport. Every accident I read about tears my heart. Some are avoidable, so I'd like to be part of passing on important skills and history as well as the joy of climbing.

Climbing experience (specify indoors/outdoors if relevant): Climbing pretty steadily since 2002 indoors and outdoors. Sport and trad multipitch, limited alpine, no bouldering, dry tooling, aid, or ice.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: Based in the Boulder/Denver area. These days I climb most often in Boulder Canyon, Clear Creek, and Eldo but also like to venture farther. I especially want to do more this year in Lumpy Ridge, Turkey Rocks, and Indian Creek.

Availability: I have a pretty full schedule but not a set schedule. If booked ahead, I can make most days work including weekdays.

What I provide for this: Patience, warmth, and support. Solid foundation in sport and trad, gear and techniques. Focus on crack climbing if that's of interest. I would also be interested in teaching/practicing self-rescue skills like hauling, rope ascension, two-person rappels, passing knots, and belay transfers. I'm not a fast hiker, super strong climber, or a big risk taker. Days out with me are moderate and focused on learning, sharing, having fun climbing, and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. I lead up to about 5.7 trad in Eldo or BoCan, 5.10s sport. I know a fair bit about climbing accidents and how to avoid them. I lost a friend to an accident last March which has made me even more sober about safety.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee: Someone interested in taking the time to talk and practice in order to learn. Ability to put ego aside, ask questions, and consider input. Comfort with speaking up if something doesn't seem right to you or you have learned something different. Safety-minded. Solid lead belay would be ideal, though if you don't already have that skill, we can get you there.

What I am looking to avoid in a mentor/mentee: I'm not the best mentor for you if your goal is to always climb the hardest thing you possibly can. Speaking of sobriety, please save alcohol, pot, and other altering substances for after the climbing and driving are done.

Aw, thanks, Tal! I do really want to get to Wonderland. I just caught up on your thread and see that you have a google group and Patreon which I'll check out. I'd love to participate in your work days. Are you still finding good weather days to get out there this winter?

Edit- I guess I should post this in your Wonderland thread, ha! I'll move it there.

I have dedicated almost everyday to progressing in climbing for the last year. I've confidently led up to 5.12a outdoor on sport, and can confidently lead 5.8-5.9 in eldo mainly. And currently boulder around V8 outdoors currently. I have limited trad experience, but have superb trad partners, and have followed, and led multis, and am more than willing to lead harder pitches, and am confident in my placements, and efficiency. I have done some winter Mountaineering(mod-steep snow), along with plenty of summer mountaineering up to 5.4 trad, and am looking to expand my disciplines to ice climbing as well.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags:

I currently live in Denver but am willing to go near anywhere in the front range, but am willing to travel for trips.

Availability:

Free all the time

Why I am pursuing this:

I want nothing more than experience on rock, ice, and snow, I want to tackle large alpine objectives, big walls, and high altitude mountains and want to gain knowledge, technical skills, and meet people that share my mindset, and will do whatever it takes to get myself to that point, ive wanted nothing more than to hone my skill, listen, and gain perspective, knowledge, and skills from people more experienced and stronger than me.

What I provide for this:

I am very stoked on all climbing, safe, and have my own gear(trad, sport, alpine, and some ice gear. I will willingly suffer, and imbrace that it happens, and am willing do to whatever it takes.

Also willing to drive/carpool for trips.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee:

Someone knowledgeable with a good attitude, good communication skills, reliable, and patient.

Age, Pronouns: 29, he/him

Climbing Experience: 9ish years mostly outdoors on trad, sport, and alpine.

Geographic Location/Targeted Crags: Boulder- Eldorado, Boulder Canyon, RMNP, Lumpy

Availability: Flexible

Why I am pursuing this: A few reasons- I want mentorship to help break past doubt and fear of falling. Many of my trusted partners have moved or have conflicting schedules and I need to build more trusted partnerships to keep doing what I love to do.

What I provide for this: A soft catch, stoke, and willingness to try hard and try new styles of climbing and cooked up missions. I love a long day and an adventure and I have a pretty flexible schedule so I can be there.

What I am looking for in a mentor/mentee: I want my mentor to be stoked for me to grow as a climber and I would hope they have patience when I fail. I want to get better and I have lots of goals so I’d hope they’d reasonably work with me to help make those things happen.

Other notes: I’ve been on and off though my 9 years of climbing- largely because I’ve been a skier during that time as well and a big part of the winter historically gets lost to sliding on snow. I’m stoked to climb this winter though and balance that with skiing.

Thanks Tal for putting this together!
