Thank you so much to everyone who helped care for Greg, all of his friends and family are all very touched and grateful for each of you. I climbed with him 2 weeks ago, his mammut rope looked in excellent condition as I remember teasing him he had a shiny new yuppy rope nowadays.
He had successful surgeries and there is good hope his body could recover, however it will be a few days before the docs are done with surgeries and can disentubate him, lower sedation, and see if he regains consciouness.
Dean if you can keep the 2 pieces of rope, it might make sense at some point to ask Mammut what they think of it. Also I would love to talk with you, sorry to meet in such circumstance, Greg had mentioned you to all of us.
Greg (and Elizabeth) you guys will both be in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there. Dean, I’m sure this shook you up and hope you are doing ok. Thankful to hear there were so many competent people responding, and really hoping the best for you.
Healing thoughts to Grug! Hang in there Greg and Elizabeth! Pic of a better day a while back:

Sending all the recovery vibes to Greg! You got this. Sounds like an amazing crew of fellow climbers that acted on this terrible situation. Well done and my heart goes out to all of you. Seeing stuff like that is not easy.
So sorry to hear this news about Greg. A great job to everyone involved in keeping it together, administering CPR and helping Greg get to care. Caring thoughts to Greg’s family and everyone involved. I hope Greg can make a speedy and full recovery.
What a nightmarish situation! I know if a few instances of ropes getting cut in a fall, but it is such a freakishly-low-possibility event that we usually don’t think of.
Best wishes to Greg, family, and friends.

Thinking about you tonight, Greg, and hope you recover quickly and fully.
I watched the ‘Hard is Easy’ video with Mammut when it first came out and immediately purchased the core protect rope after watching the video. I’ve been almost exclusively trad climbing on this rope since. This kind of accident is nightmare fuel for us trad climbers. Hoping the best for Greg and shout out to all the people involved who helped a fellow climber. I’m thinking about Greg and his friends and family tonight, and hoping he is able to make a full recovery.
Upthread I asked if anyone knew if the rope involved was the standard Mammut 9.5 or the Mammut Core Protect 9.5. I just bought the latter specifically with cut resistance in mind… some tests seem to show it works to a large degree while others are skeptical. If the rope involved was a Core Protect I’m sure Mammut (and I)!) would like to know (Mammut should investigate, regardless, just to add to our knowledge base). Around here, we often use double ropes in teams of three or when the rappels dictate it, but also as insurance against a cut rope as some limestone crags have some pretty sharp edges along vertical runnels.
Again, wishing Greg as speedy a recovery as possible, both of body and mind.

Laurent - I sent you a PM with my contact info and it would be good to connect with you. We were using Greg's 70 m, which is not the brand new 60 m one that you probably used with him recently. I put the main section in Greg's car, but I'm not sure if the other end got put in his pack or went with him during the rescue. I'm also not sure if the rope was a core protect model.
I really hate to hear this. Greg is an awesome partner that I've had the privilege to share some experiences with. He's always been safe, competent and pretty indestructible. This seems like one of those rare situations where there was nothing that could have been done -- just horrible luck. Thanks to all the bystanders who helped. I've been in situations where everyone helped and one situation where everyone ran away because they were to afraid to help. It takes courage. It's good for the rescuers to take some time to process their emotions too. It's traumatic.
Most of all, keep fighting Greg and know that we're all sending vibes your way. Recovery is a journey and at some point the path becomes as important as the goal. Elizabeth my thoughts are with you as well.
Oh no!!! I’m so very sorry to hear this about Greg…echoing others, a very experienced climber and super nice guy. What a nightmare scenario…kudos to everyone who was on scene and did such an amazing job. Sending lots of healing strength to Greg…and also to his wife!
Hope Greg recovers quickly and is in stable condition! Super scary to hear about a rope cutting.... one of those things you never want to consider as being a possibility. As I'm sure we all are, very curious to hear more about the rope and the details around that. Might be worth reaching out to HowNot2 to test the rope as well, but that can come at another time.
