Two things you can do really.
Stop paying/staying and encourage others to do so. (Boycot) I haven’t stayed there since 2007 when they began charging.

The other is to stop voting for stupid.

Just to follow up, as of 9/12/2025, camping fee has been raised to $36/night and day use remains at $10/day. I wanna say that the camping fee was still $28/night just a couple months ago. 

Also, restroom was completely out of toilet paper. Thank god I checked first and keep a roll in the car.

Reminder to not enable private companies to price gouge you for using your public lands. Even if you can easily afford it, giving them money will prove that it's a feasible business model for them, and they'll look to expand to more areas.

This applies to pretty much every official campground. They have all become yet another way to simultaneously enshittify everything and to further concentrate wealth at the top.

Fuck the privatization of our public lands. Now the lions share of the fee goes into the pockets of someone instead of helping maintain and upgrade our infrastructure. This isn't even touching on the fact the CA parks pass no longer is accepted at places Royal Elk runs...they have their own pass you need to buy where it used to not be the case.
It's absolute crap. For profit companies stiffing we the people, yet again.

I think the issues are a bit more nuanced than that, but in a nutshell, you’re not wrong. 

They should remove the rock in the campground, which explains the campground was donated to the climbers, on grounds of false advertisement. /s

I've camped at the echo summit snopark and it's not a bad free option.  Maybe a 15 min drive?

It was bought and paid for by climbers and donated to future climbers. Management was handed over to the FS along with a large sum of money for basic maintenance (pit toilets etc). In 2007, the FS decided to steal it, and then charge you for use of it. Originally the suggested price was 2 dollars a vehicle. When it rolled out it jumped to 10 for a site plus 5 dollars per extra vehicle. 

Honestly, they should have just made it a parking lot.
