hey all, my buddy and i are planning a trip out to devils lake 6/24-28, however as of right now the weather aint looking too pretty. we already took off work, so in the case of us cancelling due to weather, we intend on going up to section 13/palisade to climb and camp for those 5 days.
if we have to go up north instead, im curious if anyone knows of good free/cheap camping spots that we can go without a reservation? i know theres some on the SHT, but ive heard those are first come first serve and more or less intended for the thru hikers. any recommendations of places we can set down in case we have to cancel DL?
It's still over a week out, so the forecast can change a lot. Forecast was calling for rain and T-storms along the north shore all of last week but it changed abruptly Friday afternoon and this past weekend was absolutely beautiful. USFS campgrounds nearby have been my go-to's, like Finland and Eckbeck. Tettegouche and other state parks have campgrounds that fill up fast, but they also get last-minute cancellations so it's worth checking IMO. Lots of other private campgrounds, resorts, and hotels nearby too, but I don't have any personal experience with them. There are also a few hidden gems for car camping if you're stealthy and know where to look.
