Trying to find climbing on drive south. Anyone have beta on Redding area or near Shasta for moderate sport..this spot seemed liike a good one but had a note about closure...is the whole area closed?

Legal answer is yes the whole area is closed, the shredding is just convenient for Redding but not good too so imo it’s not worth poaching the closure. Lovers Leap Limestone north of Mount Shasta is good, as well as Marble Caves west of Redding for actually quality sport, other stuff exists around Mount Shasta proper but it’s more worth it for an after work crag but tbh a home wall is better than some of that bolted volcanic choss.

I’ve found Cantara Loop convenient when making that drive. Some of the routes there are sport bolted and pretty decent:

A bonus for us is the river 40 feet from the climbs. Our dogs highly approve of this feature.

If you have enough time, Castle Crags is also insanely awesome and severely underrated. The approaches are long so it’s less convenient, but it’s worth it as a destination rather than just a roadside stop. You might consider taking an extra day to go there if you’re already driving by. I ended up finally going there after years of driving by and will certainly be back in the future. I’d also second Cantara as a really cool spot that’s a bit more convenient.

Thank you so much, all! yeah, I’ve heard Castle Crags is amazing and I had thought about making a detour for that exact reason. Headed there with my son so could be a cool side trip. I’ve been to Lover’s leap way back when I first learned to climb would be cool to get back there and appreciate knowing about Cantara! Cheers!
