Hello everyone. I'm currently a high school student in SoCal and a passionate mountaineer and skier. A couple of months ago I posted here asking about what were some of the causes of mountaineering accidents in SoCal, and I got a lot of responses saying that many people were inexperienced and unprepared for the alpine conditions and weather found in these mountains. I think a lot of this is attributed to the lack of resources covering this area. When I was planning my own trip up Mt. Baldy in the winter, many of the sources I found were hard to find and hard to interpret. You really have to look everywhere to get a glimpse of what to expect. I recently began a passion project called SoCal Backcountry, which aims to provide a user-friendly and informative resource hub covering the three main mountain ranges in SoCal. Currently, we have a conditions page that utilizes data from the NWS and recalculates based on elevation as well as a page dedicated to linking resources from around the internet that covers the area. I hope to soon add detailed route guides, an observation reporting page, as well as more articles and resources about trip planning, snow and avalanche safety, as well as gear guides on picking the right equipment for these mountains, since I noticed that a lot of accidents were caused by improper equipment as well. You can access my website with this link: socalbackcountry.org, and you can find more information about myself and our cause. I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could check it out and provide some feedback!
