Background

I used to be on the heavy side in my life weighing an extra 60+ pounds during my 20s. Now in my mid thirties, that skin never came fully back and I have a bit of loose skin around the chest, not quite moobs, but I’m not your average stick thin climber.

The Incident

Yesterday I was belaying my friend -let’s call him Nikolaj- on a TR belay of 3 Strikes in Indian Creek. After he started climbing I bent down to grab the rope bag and move it to my comfy belay rock to avoid getting my rope sandier than it already is. I was taking in slack while doing this because the start is scrambly and he was flying up the 3s crack.

While bending over my grigri was in the locked position having pulled in slack before bending over. Upon Nikolaj ascending another foot the grigri snapped into the unlocked position. At this very moment my right nipple had aligned itself directly with the back of grigri. When it snapped into the unlocked position, it clamped my nipple. It hurt like hell and I couldn’t come out of a bent over position since it had my nip which meant I couldn’t look at the situation. I ended up just ripping it out since in the pain, I couldn’t think about how else to go about opening the grigri from its unlocked position.

The grigri did break the skin on both sides of the teat. No blood actually shed but wow is my nip sore today.

Watch out for your nips!!
