Any Ricoh GRIII users here?

Just got myself a GRiiix and have been stoked with it this past month. Since it's my first "real" camera, I've been babying it in an extra padded sling pouch, even for just walking around and little hikes. But would love to get it on some climbs / backcountry trips if I can figure out a safe storage system (and raise my risk tolerance a bit). I did carry it in my hand for an hour-long run with a buddy, though I felt bad stopping every five minutes to snap a shot and was nervous about randomly tripping or something with it.

Went with the iiix since my phone will give me the wide angle shots if I really want them, and I wanted photos distinctly different than the ones I'd been taking with my phone for the past 10 yrs. The ricoh subreddit is pretty awesome and active, and I've enjoyed knowing that all the photos posted there I could "technically" take as well, since there aren't $2000+ lenses to attach to it.

Get a small padded pouch and clip it to your harness.  Unless you're in some squeezy chimney, it will be fine.

This is how I carry mine, clipped to my harness.

Considering getting a Ricoh GR III, I’m primarily a boulderer but I’m assuming for some casual action shots + landscape the 28mm focal length would be better than the 40mm? Also I’m a bit worried about chalk and the purported dust issue with this camera if anyone has any experience with this or specific precautions they take?

There is a collar around the lens assembly. You can undo a ring to install a Filter Adapter and Filter onto that. Those won’t retract like the lens does when powered off, so you’ll lose a bit of the camera’s pocketability.

I see that makes sense, I could just switch it on/off if I’m gonna go out climbing. Any thoughts on better focal lengths for recording outdoor bouldering session’s primarily?

I find 28mm a weird focal length for me. It’s wide, but never quite feels wide enough. I’d almost prefer a 40mm…but the nice part about bouldering is that you can usually move closer or further away to effectively change the focal length of sorts.

Ricoh announced the GR IV today, expected release date is “Autumn 2025”. It doesn’t seem to be a revolutionary improvement over the GR III from the specs:

No weather sealing?

That is the one upgrade that would have convinced me to trade in my GRIII for a GRIV.

None of these changes are significant enough to convince me to spend the $$ on a GRIV.

I am currently using Zen Logic Extreme ZL‑4KHD, it gives good results when shooting dynamic moments, and it fits comfortably on the equipment.
