What up rippers! My dad had his leg amputated below the knee in August which completed a journey surrounding an injury received in a car accident 18 years ago. He is a lifelong mountain man and is who got me into the hills. I live in Bozeman and was able to take him ice climbing last February which instantly clicked for him. He has been extremely diligent with his pt and his been up moving around and spending most days on his new leg. He has a goal of climbing at least 1 pitch of ice this season, but I still need to find some crampons for him that I will have modified for his pyramid mount. Looking for double points that will be easy to weld a pyramid mount onto. Also open to any adaptive climbing advice/encouragement for him!

I’ve always thought lower limb amputees could make crazy awesome prosthetic attachments for climbing! Why bother with crampons that you might attach to a boot on a prosthetic foot attached to the, uh what would you call it- the remainder of the leg? When you could attach some sort of ice tool directly to the leg? Maybe the same tool as you would find on a climbing ice axe but mounted upside down? You could make it adjustable so that it could extend beyond normal reach. Lots of possibilities.  Don’t know what that would do for torque, etc. But super curious as to how it would work out.

Maybe try shooting an email to paradox sports. They work with all types of adaptive climbers and could probably point you in the right direction.

Consider reaching out to Hugh Herr (Crusher, MIT professor, and double amputee) if you haven’t already. This kind of thing is quite literally his job.

New ice climbers often don't kick hard/accurately enough to get good penetration with dual frontpoints, and so do better with monopoint crampons. If, as I suspect, your dad's prosthetic "foot" will be lighter than a human lower leg+ice boot, he may also do better with less steel to get into the ice.

Talk to Adrien Costa, he live in Bozeman and works for Beartooth Alpine.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
