Calling All ASCA Volunteers: Dome Rock And Parker Bluff Rebolt

Original Post
Dave Daly · · Kernville, CA · Joined Mar 2007 · Points: 2,962

I'm hoping to gather some interested ASCA volunteers to begin a collective effort in a bolt replacement effort at Dome Rock and Parker Bluff. These areas have been neglected throughout the years, especially Parker. Dome Rock has seen a bit of love by a handful of folks but not enough to keep folks safe out there. If this is something that would interest you and others you know who are volunteers for the ASCA, please contact me at the following email address:  climb_on_dude@yahoo.com

Let's show some love and keep our resources safe!

Cheers,

Dave Daly

Hi Dave, Some years ago Greg Barnes at ASCA sent me a large box of bolts/hangers/anchors/etc. for use at The Needles and Dome. Between what I used and I passed on to others that went up in various routes, I still have about half of the lot left. It's a good amount of hardware; 1/2" 5 piece bolts, Fixe hangers, some bits, etc. If you're picking up the mantle up there, as it appears, I should pass the lot along to you.

I have a couple reasons for a trip up to Kernville. I have a package for the historical society, I need to eat/drink at KRBC at least one more time before we move to Wyoming in the spring, and now I should bring you this collection of hardware.

I'll DM you about a date... maybe sometime in the next few weeks if you're around.

Hey Kris!

Hey Elmar!

Ahhhhh.....feeling the Taco Stand vibe seeing you guys post up! Been too long Kris. I'll reach out to you via email (courtesy of EC providing your email). Yah, please come out to K-Ville. I'll drag Newman to the brewery too. Of note, I'll be out of town from April 8-12 (Mon-Fri). Should be back by Saturday.

Elmar....would be great to join forces to pull old mank. I have one other that is interested. Thinking some early recon of Parker to get an assessment of what's going on out there. Eddie Joe has been a wealth of info on a variety of beta to prep on getting things done. Dome will be a summer/fall effort. Send me an email on your availability and we can work from there.

Cheers you two!!

Dave- Hi.

Good on ya for doing the work! I’m sure the old 5/16 bolts on Parker Bluff could use replacing.
Beware PB is quite possibly the hottest place on earth!
I find that the only good season is in November, on a cold day, when the sun is hiding.
If you could use anything hit me up- I have a good length of chain we have been using on projects to the east.

Thanks Guyzo!  Yep, I've been out there in late spring and it was pretty hot. Been chatting with EC on what's out there and some logistics. Yah, will wait on getting things going out at PB (roughly Oct/Nov). Dome Rock will be more ideal throughout the regular season. I know of a few folks that have got out there to replace stuff within the last 6 to 7 years. I just don't know which routes have been worked on. And the ASCA doesn't really have people log their effort. Ideally, I'd like to hit up most of the left side first. Plans to be hashed out.  On a side note update, 90% of Kern Slab is now equipped with new hardware. All the routes on the upper left side, from Chouinard Special to Branscum-Martin have been updated, with the exception being Hooker (has the big tree leaning on it still). Perhaps one or two routes remain but they have likely never seen traffic in decades.

Elmar/Tris -

I'll be reaching out to you guys after April 18th. I'm pretty contained with work projects but it looks like I'll have some weekends after that. I'm hoping to add another K-Ville local to the effort. BTW, Greg Barnes is sending me a few 5/16" taps to pull welded sleeves from 5-piece bolts. Even being delicate, I've broken two already. He's sending 60ct 3/8" SS bolts and hangers, 40ct 1/2" bolts and hangers and 60ct 8mm SS quicklinks. And Kris will be passing some gear our way when he passes through K-Ville later this month. Then there's the current cache I still have on hand from the ASCA. Plenty of gear to get a lot done! :)

Sorry, I've been away from the boards lately. Lots going on. On a side note, Kris stopped by in Kernville for a visit. Good times catching up with him and resurfacing wonderful memories! He contributed to the ASCA hardware count and left what he had with me. At this point, I would think we have what we need to cover all bolt and anchor replacements for Dome Rock and likely Parker too. It's just a matter of squaring up on when is a good time for all three of us to get up there and get started. Kris told me that the gate at Johnsondale is closed right now. That includes LLoyds Meadow Rd and California Hot Springs Rd. And, of course, getting past Camp Nelson isn't happening since they're repairing the road. Chatted with a friend who works with the FS and mentioned they are logging out there near the Freeman Grove area (logging all the burned but salvageable timber). So they have Lloyds Meadow Rd closed for that reason. Anyone considering on climbing at Voodoo is a NO-GO at the present time. Essentially, only residents of Ponderosa and Peppermint Creek in-holding are permitted. Kris mentioned they even have a guard tending the gate at Johnsondale.

Just to clarify, the guard I talked to was an employee of the R-Ranch of Sequoia, at Johnsondale. When I rolled up and stopped he came running out to see what I was up to.

I'd like to consider getting up there in July. June is booked for me as well. Definitely early start kinda stuff before it gets warm. Let's chat offline.

I also wanted to let people know that access from Johnsondale and up to the Divide Hwy and Dome Rock is open. However, the gate to the Needles trailhead is still closed. The forest service has a contractor in there right now felling trees and harvesting what they can. No idea when they'll finish up.

Not trying to push this out to the right (work has been taking most of attention).

Elmar and John, perhaps we could set a date in late July. Sat July 19th, 20th and 21st? Camp there for the weekend?

That would be Dome Rock, right?

Is it possible to drive to it now?

Dave Daly · · Kernville, CA · Joined Mar 2007 · Points: 2,962

Hey Guyzo!  Yes, you can drive there now.

It's the Needles you still can't drive out to access the trailhead. They are still logging back there. No forecasted date on when they'll be done.
