  • I just got gifted a sick Mammut Crag Sender MIPS helmet to replace my 14 year old Petzl, but the right strap sits uncomfortably right on my ear. Wondering if anyone has experience with this helmet, specifically adjusting that strap? Or is it just a design flaw?

Everything is fine with my helmet and it fits me like no other! I do, however, find that the straps are adjustable around the ears on one side.

Is the right strap shorter than the left on your helmet?

No shit, had this same thing happen to me. There was absolutely no way to make the right side fit over my ear.  I know all climbing gear sales are final but I was able to swap it out with a different one.  This was at the Mammut outlet and even they couldn't figure out what was going on. Side by side the strap for the right ear was drastically shorter on the one helmet.  Return it and get a new one.  Fantastic helmet.

Dude - thank you for this, I thought I was crazy. I’ll see if I can try a different one b/c the helmet seems sweet otherwise.

I have a large, ear strap on the right is a touch over 13" long.

Awesome, thanks Kevin. That damn plastic piece sits right on my ear. This pic is the second helmet, right? How are you measuring the strap?

Yes, this is the good helmet.  The 1st one had that plastic piece smashing my ear lobe. I can't find my tailors tape so I just used a tape measure. Pulled the strap back and measured from the front of helmet to the fold over at the plastic piece, 5.5. Flipped it around and pulled it forward and measure to the same point, ~7.75.

You can adjust that strap where it passes through the headlamp strap at the back of the helmet. Took me a while to figure that out.

Really? I can’t get the strap to move at all back there.

*Edit: You’re 100% right! really have to tug on it to get it to move. Thank you!!

Damn, I pulled way harder than I was comfortable with before it moved.  Would not have figured it out on my own.

Thanks for posting this. This saved me a lot of frustration from having to return it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
